About this concert
With a voice that demands to be heard live, the rising-star jazz vocalist takes to the stage to spread love at this year's Meltdown. After winning vocalist of the year at the 2020 Jazz FM awards, Judi Jackson has continued to put her world-class talent in the spotlight, releasing her full-length debut album Grace in 2023. Jackson grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, playing piano and singing in the church choir. Her career started to take shape in her teens: at 16 she opened for Mavis Staples, and two years later she teamed up with jazz fusionists Snarky Puppy. When she moved to London, she channelled influences such as Joni Mitchell, Sade and Erykah Badu into her acclaimed EP Blame It On My Youth. Jackson’s My American Songbook live show includes her own interpretations of songs from jazz greats such as Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald along with her original soul-infused music to create an unforgettable performance. ‘My main objective is to spread love to any and all willing to receive it,’ Jackson says.

Judi Jackson Biography

24-year old vocalist Judi Jackson is set to release her hotly-tipped debut EP Blame It On My Youth on December 8th 2017. Blending elements of soul, jazz and R&B, and adorned with lush harmonic textures and melodic touchstones on themes of love and family, the EP features seven original tracks which present an introduction to a pre-eminent young vocal talent whose star is firmly on the rise.

Performing since the age of 12, Jackson was fully set on her path following an impromptu encounter with Wynton Marsalis who subsequently sent her a box of music that became the seed of inspiration for her development as a vocalist. Jackson began listening to and studying the sounds of Blossom Dearie, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Mahalia Jackson amongst many others and was soon performing across America and the UK.

Although lauded for her popular tribute shows, which see her performing the works of Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse, it’s through her own music that Jackson’s unique talent truly shines. As accomplished a songwriter as she is a performer, Jackson has been described as possessing a tone and poise beyond her years and at the age of 24 the singer-songwriter from Raonoke, Virginia is set for a lengthy and fascinating career.
