About this concert
The art of telling stories through improvisation and song is something that Michelle Nicolle has been developing and honing since she first started taking singing jazz seriously in 1991. The high-wire act of singing without a chordal instrument is one of Michelle's favourite adventures. She's worked this into a beautiful ensemble of bass, drums and 2 horns and written some rich, interesting arrangements of songs which are all penned by women (including herself). Each member of the quintet is a respected and glorious improvisor in their own right, and together they weave through arranged and open, spontaneous composition to animate the stories of the songs - connecting the audience, composer and ensemble in a lovely, meaningful way.
Angela Davis: alto saxophone
Jon Hunt: clarinet/tenor saxophone
Tom Lee: double bass
Ronny Ferella: drums
