About this concert
Grammy nominated producer, Gitkin is a multi-instrumentalist hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty border town where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. Reviews of Gitkin’s first two LP’s grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own. Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his follow up album, Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadened his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlightsthe intense flavors found in each savory ingredient. GITKIN Biography

Gitkin is the alter ego of Pimps Of Joytime front man and Grammy nominated producer, Brian J. The mysterious hybrid of styles Gitkin produces is both beguiling and enchanting, a style he has dubbed "Outernational Psychedelic Twang". With influences ranging from Peruvian Chicha to 60’s Pakistani surf rock, Gitkin weaves a tapestry of sonic goodness featuring flavorful guitar stylings, hand clapping grooves and intriguing compositions. "It's all funk to me" says Brian J when asked about the eclectic influences of the project. Backed by a stellar cast of musicians, Gitkin has generated a buzz playing exclusive shows in NYC and San Francisco. On stage, the live band delivers a spirited performance, captivating their audiences.

Gitkin first came to wider attention last year with the release of the 5 Star Motel album on Wonderwheel. The globetrotting US label is the perfect home for his wayfaring sound, all twanging guitar ruminating on the way of the road, and now he's back with a compact 7" that features more of his seriously funky instrumental jams. There's a whiff of Omar Khorshid and other such oriental guitar maestros in the worldly jams Gitkin commits to tape here. "Saint Claude Dash" especially has the party spirit in its bones, while "Chicha Nola" sports a folky quality that inspires cheer from the get go. Wonderful instrumental delights from a supremely talented troubadour.
