Jacqui Dankworth Biography

Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK.

Her concert appearances and her stylistically diverse recordings showcase her virtuosic and effortless mastery of a wide spectrum of genres. Known primarily as a jazz singer, Jacqui also draws on folk, soul, blues and classical influences. Her voice has been described as “multi-faceted” and “incomparable” by The Times.

Jacqui is also an accomplished actor, having performed leading parts with the Royal Shakespeare Company, The National Theatre and in London's West End - such as in Steven Sondheim’s “Into The Woods” playing Cinderella and in Sophisticated Ladies – a celebration of the music of Duke Ellington and In Les Liaisons Dangereuse with the RSC . In 2012 Jacqui appeared as Rosa in the second series of The Borgia’s starring Jeremy Irons on Showtime TV and is in the film “Les Miserables” directed by Tom Hooper.

She has collaborated and worked with many diverse musicians including The Brodsky Quartet and Courtney Pine, Marvin Hamlisch, Paloma Faith, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Gretchen Parlato, Clare Teale, Georgie Fame, David Gordon, Charlie Wood, Gregory Porter, The BBC Big Band, RTE, LSO and RPO Orchestras and the legendary Chick Corea.

Live To Love, her most recent CD was released In 2013, receiving rave reviews, featuring material written by Jacqui. In the same year she performed at Cadogan Hall in London with musicians from the RPO and the BBC Big Band in a program featuring songs from stage and screen. She also performed as guest vocalist at the Radio 2 Friday Night Is Music Night's Celebration for the Dambuster’s Special Anniversary Event at Biggin Hill. She appeared in The Opera Company’s new production of Alben Berg’s “Lulu” (entitled “American Lulu”) presented at the Edinburgh Festival in Austria and at The Young Vic in London .

2014 has been a busy year so far with many performances in theatres and festivals around the UK . She has been recording with The Butterfly Wing Project (with pianist David Gordon, violinist Chris Garrick and cellist, Ben Davies),co producing her husband Charlie Wood's new album ( "New Souvenirs" ) to be released on their own label Perdido Records and will be headlining with The Liverpool Philharmonic and Big Band on NYE 2014/15 performing "Songs Of Stage And Screen".

Jacqui is currently working on her new album to be released early 2015.

“Jacqui Dankworth doesn’t confine herself to singing jazz; she is gracefully at ease in folk music and semi classical contexts, as well as being an imaginative interpreter of standards. But in all her incarnations, she exhibits a subtle control of dynamics and a voluptuous tonal richness that seems to make almost any material sound special”
– John Fordham (The London Guardian)
