About this concert
Rachel Garlin’s latest release The Ballad of Madelyne & Therese (2023) is a soundtrack for the story of forbidden love. Thirteen songs artfully slung together with hemp-rope and heart, the album hangs, swings and carries its weight like a messenger bag across your back. Born and raised in Berkeley, Garlin’s expansive repertoire comes from folk and fans out toward rock and roll, each song laced with her signature style of “denim and poetry” – threads of textures and experiences and conversations woven into songs that feel artfully succinct and deeply complete. Recent praise from the SF Chronicle, Americana Highways, Pop Matters, and Bluegrass Situation highlight Garlin’s work as a constant collaborator and dedicated community member in her San Francisco neighborhood where she lives with her wife and kids. Lila Blue Biography
LILA BLUE (they/she) is a twenty-three year old non-binary and queer folk musician, singer-songwriter, playwright and performer based out of Brooklyn. They have been performing and composing professionally since early childhood in communally devised theater with the likes of Bread and Puppet Theater and the Lake Lucille Chekhov Project, as well as developing a solo music career. Their projects navigate themes of grief, joy, intergenerational trauma, rage, queerness and collisions with divine and haunted spirits, stemming from their own intuitive practices (which include writing in their sleep). They have released 3 LP’s, 2 EP’s, and have featured and composed music for film and television, most notably for MTV and Lifetime. They are currently developing an original musical about the life and work of artist Hilma af Klint, and will be releasing their fourth LP, “Sweet Pea,” in the fall of 2023.
