About this concert
A respected performer for many years in her native Australia, Lauren Lucille has been steadily establishing herself as an impressive artist since moving to the UK. As well as an excellent jazz vocalist she is also a skilled singer/songwriter, as her 2019 album “Let Go” demonstrates. However, it is her jazz credentials she will be showcasing tonight as she and her quintet, featuring Special Guest Graeme Wilson-sax, pay homage to the celebrated partnership of John Coltrane and singer Johnny Hartman from their iconic 1963 recording, alongside original tunes by Lucille and Wilson themselves. As Lauren describes it: “You're in for a night of heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and favourite, more upbeat tunes”. “…an incredible vocal range” Vents magazine; “Lucille…oozes…musical talent” Folkrag; “Wilson manages to find plenty of fresh things to say within the boundaries of the jazz tradition. His tenor sound exhibits great clarity and fluency” Jazz Mann

Lauren Lucille Biography

Lauren Lucille shares her love and life lessons and stories through a musical fusion of folk/jazz/pop.

She has a sassy, soulful and versatile voice and either plays solo or with a band!

Born in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, Lauren was surrounded by music from an early age. Her original musical inspiration came from her parents, in particular the musical family of her mother, renowned jazz vocalist Sharny Russell. She could often be found at her mother’s gigs, learning how to swing before she even knew what swing was. Over the last 10 years, artists such as Kurt Elling, Tierny Sutton, Gian Slater, Sara Serpa, Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap and Ani Difranco have all had a large influence on the way Lauren writes and performs music.

Lauren’s songwriting started at the age of ten, and through her teens, Lauren was writing folk and pop songs on guitar and piano. She is now acknowledged by her peers as a great composer and performer and was twice a finalist in the QMusic Awards for two of her jazz compositions. James Morrison the great Australian trumpet player added one of Lauren’s compositions to his ‘best of jazz’ list for QANTAS international and national inflight entertainment! She is blessed with a magnificent voice, a sound grasp of harmony and sophisticated rhythmic sense.

Lauren has been performing professionally since 2006 firstly around Australia, and since her move to Europe in 2013, mostly in London, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Vienna. Her desire is to travel and sing and 'to make people feel something' with her music. She has performed in the Melbourne International Women’s Jazz Festival, Noosa Jazz Festival, Valley Jazz Festival (Brisbane), Yeppoon Village Festival,

WOMAD (UK) and Jazztime (Germany).

Lauren launched her 2012 all original album 'Hidden Here' produced by Garry Smith to a sold out theatre (200 people) in July 2012, and had an encore launch to which 100 people attended. This album has been received well by the general public and also radio stations across Australia including ABC. The genre is mostly melancholy jazz with pop influences using a jazz quartet and string trio.

And finally, in 2019, Lauren released her second all original album ‘Let Go’ produced by one of UKs top pop and jazz producers - Troy Miller (Amy Winehouse, Laura Mvula, Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter). This has more pop influences using electric guitars, a moog and a hammond.

Lauren will tour this new album in 2019/2020 and she is still doing jazz gigs and solo gigs in London and Germany.

“This gal has chops!!” Janice Slater – Singer.

“Just wanted to thank you for the wonderful gift of your CD. Wow! Stunning work. You have an amazing gift. The musicianship is exquisite, the tonality of your voice and the sparseness of the arrangements – really comforting, compelling and inspiring. Thank you so much!!”
Jeff Pevar – Guitarist/composer/producer
(Ray Charles/Rickie Lee Jones/Crosby, Stills and Nash/James Taylor and more!)

“For my next album I have had the pleasure to be working with the wonderfully talented Lauren Lucille. Her songwriting and vocal control has got her slots in reputable festivals like Womad! She has a wonderful journey ahead and I am honoured to have her be a part of the TDF venture! Lauren, Don’t forget us when you’re famous!”
Johnny Kalsi (The Dhol Foundation, Afro Celt Sound System)

“Her album (Hidden Here) is incredibly smooth, heartfelt, and evocative – Just gorgeous!”
John Hoffman, teacher/lecturer at Brisbane Conservatorium of Music
