About this concert
Voted one of the ‘Hottest Bass Players in the World’ by readers of Bass Player magazine, Shez Raja is a seriously talented musician and dynamic live performer whose work in a fascinating mix of Indo-jazz, funk and groove styles has propelled him to the forefront of the UK jazz scene, drawing comparisons to electric bass legend Jaco Pastorius. Over the past few years Shez has released the critically-acclaimed albums “Journey to Shambhala” (ft guitar genius Wayne Krantz and Indian percussion guru Trilok Gurtu) and “Gurutopia” (ft global jazz legends Mike Stern and Randy Brecker). He was also featured on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Line-Up and performed at the Royal Festival Hall and Islington Assembly Hall in London. For his latest record (‘Tales from the Punjab’ released on prestige label Ubuntu Music) Shez dug deep into his rich South Asian heritage to create his most exquisite and heartfelt work to date. Inspired by ancient ragas, traditional melodies and free improvisations, the music creates a bridge between cultures with beautiful, exotic and timeless sounds. For this 606 show Shez has invited the extraordinary UK guitarist Guthrie Govan to be his special guest. Arguably the hottest guitarist on the international music scene today, he was voted ‘Guitarist of the Year’ by Guitarist Magazine and has previously been featured on the covers of both Guitar Player and Guitar World magazines as well. Guthrie’s 2006 solo album, “Erotic Cakes” was widely recognized as an instant classic, and to give some sense of his range and stature, he has also toured with Asia/GPS, Steven Wilson and Hans Zimmer. Guthrie joins Shez’ frequent collaborators Vasilis Xenopoulos-saxophone, Chris Jerome-keyboards and Jamie ‘Drumcat’ Murray-drums for what will surely be an epic night!

Guthrie Govan Biography

Guthrie Govan (born December 27, 1971 in Chelmsford, Essex) is an English guitarist and winner of Guitarist Magazine's "Guitarist of the Year" award. He was a member of Asia from 2001 to 2006 and is currently a member of Progressive Rock band GPS. His debut solo album, Erotic Cakes, was released through Cornford Records in 2006.

Govan attended King Edward VI Grammar School (Chelmsford). He began his involvement with Asia playing on the album Aura. He came to Asia through the recommendation of Michael Sturgis, the band's long-time session drummer. Sturgis had been a colleague of Govan's at the UK's prestigious Academy of Contemporary Music. With his work on the album complete, Guthrie was added to the Asia line-up for the tour to support the new album. Bad Asteroid, an instrumental in the live shows, was a Govan original composition. It came from the guitarist's past work with other bands.

In 2006, with Asia keyboardist Geoff Downes leaving to reform an earlier Asia line-up, Govan and the other two band members, John Payne and Jay Schellen, formed GPS, with whom he has an album out as of august 2006: Window To The Soul, already available through most online stores.

Guthrie now attends a lot of jazz clubs in the heart of Chelmsford, performing weekly with his brother Seth Govan.

As of august 2006, he has released his solo album "Erotic Cakes" which is available through http://www.cornfordrecords.com/.
