About this concert
Frankie Gavin is generally regarded as the finest traditional Irish fiddle player of his generation. He has played fiddle and flute since his teenage years winning All-Ireland competitions for both at age 17. Originally influenced by the great Irish and American-Irish fiddle players such as James Morrison, he later found himself playing with stars: The Rolling Stones, Stephane Grappelli and Yehudi Menuhin and for celebrity audiences including four American presidents: John Kennedy on his 1962 visit to Ireland, then Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama. Perhaps most significantly, the name Frankie Gavin is synonymous with De Dannan, the globally renowned band he founded with Alec Finn in the mid-1970s. After a short break, in the early 2000s, Frankie started a new version of the band with a young line-up. Frankie will be joined by Catherine McHugh, one of the most outstanding young accompanists and fiddle players £2.50 from each ticket will be going to Salisbury Hospice and St Johns Place.

Frankie Gavin (born 1956) is an Irish fiddle and flute player, from Corrandulla, County Galway. He is a founding member of the Irish traditional group Dé Dannan. He is known for playing in the fast and virtuosic Galway regional style. Gavin has recorded and played with many of the best traditional musicians of his generation, and he has recorded many side-projects, including work with Elvis Costello, The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli and Earl Scruggs. He is working on an orchestral work "The Choctaw Symphony" using Irish and Choctaw themes. Together with accordionist Paul Brock, Frankie recorded "Ómos Do Joe Cooley" a tribute to the renowned Irish-American accordion player. In recent years, Frankie has released records with the likes of Joe Derrane, Michael McGoldrick and Sharon Shannon. He currently tours with the self titled "Frankie Gavin Band", which includes Derek Hickey and Carl Hession.
