About this concert
PARTY LIKE IT’S 1979! MI-SEX REVIVES THE SOUNDTRACK OF A GENERATION TO CELEBRATE THE 45TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GROUP’S TIMELESS CLASSIC LP – GRAFFITI CRIMES. Mi-Sex returns to the stage for the first time in 2024 with a massive live show that features all their greatest hits and more, celebrating post-punk and the new wave era in all its glory, promising a visual spectacular that’s as energetic as it is awe-inspiring. FRIDAY 19 APRIL: AVOCA BEACH THEATRE w/- Special Guest Piper Butcher Doors 7:30pm In 1979, ABC's Double J embraced the emergence of new wave and Mi-Sex became regular guests on Countdown, which saw the group shoot to #1 with ‘Computer Games’. Rounding-out the decade with its landmark performance at the Sydney Opera House, which became known as the ‘Concert of the Decade’ – Mi-Sex were revered by their peers as the band of its era. Early the following year, Mi-Sex Graffiti Crimes scooped the 1979 TV WEEK / COUNTDOWN MUSIC AWARDS with 4 gongs, including: Best New Single (Computer Games), Most Popular Single/Album (Computer Games/Graffiti Crimes), Best New Talent (Mi-Sex), and Best Production (Peter Dawkins/Graffiti Crimes). Exclusive to the Acoca Beach Theatre, Mi-Sex plays all the hits from Graffiti Crimes – ‘Computer Games’, ‘But You Don’t Care’, ‘Not Such A Bad Boy’, and ‘Stills’ – alongside all your favourites from Space Race (1980), Shanghaied! (1981) and Where Do They Go? (1983) – ‘People’, ‘It Only Hurts When I’m Laughing’, ‘Falling In And Out’, ‘Blue Day’ and ‘Castaway’ – and a few newbies for fun, so let’s party like it’s 1979! MORE ABOUT MI-SEX Mi-Sex formed in 1977, led by Steve Gilpin (vocals), Kevin Stanton (guitar), Don Martin (bass), Murray Burns (keys/synth), and Richard Hodgkinson (drums). Within months of releasing the debut single, ‘Straight Laddie’ (1978); an early punk parody that pays homage to Ian Dury, with a snatch of The Stranglers on keys; Mi-Sex were smashing house records right across their native New Zealand. Chasing new horizons, Mi-Sex jumped the ditch to bring their new-found sound, and highly energised theatrical shows, to Australian audiences. MORE ABOUT PIPER BUTCHER Unchained by age, Piper Butcher will give you shivers. Her soulful tones are way beyond her years. Great show! A shame they did not play the entire Graffiti Crimes album on its 45th anniversary. Worth a thought...
