About this concert
Conductor - Shiyeon Sung
Violin - Inmo Yang
Mendelssohn - The Hebrides
Unsuk Chin - Violin Concerto No.1
Sibelius - Symphony No.2
Principal Guest Conductor Shiyeon Sung brings two of her compatriots to the Auckland Philharmonia.
Unsuk Chin is one of the most important composers of today, and her staggeringly beautiful Violin Concerto No.1 is a shimmering, luminous glimpse into other worlds. It is also staggeringly difficult for the soloist, but the fast-rising violinist Inmo Yang, fresh off his win in the Sibelius Competition in 2022, is more than equal to it.
Sibelius himself concludes the concert, with his warm, expansive symphony, a neat bookend to Mendelssohn’s superbly evocative seascape.
