A regular at the iconic churches of Rage and Telepathy, the Londoner then proceeded to work closely with two of the most influential jungle imprints of the time: Lucky Spin and No U-Turn where he and fellow pioneers such as Nico, Ed Rush and Fierce honed the essence of tech-step. He also released the massive Sonar on Grooverider’s Prototype among many other era-defining cuts including the memorable Mutant series. In 1999, he established his own influential imprint: DSCI4, one of the earliest labels to champion international talent. Responsible for early or debut releases from the likes of Black Sun Empire, Mindscape, Chris.SU, Task Horizon, Silent Witness, and many more, He’s also behind the more recent label 117, a rougher, more breakbeat based imprint that he set up in 2013, starting with DJ Future’s ‘Is It Safe/ Evil Place’ 12” release, years before the current upswing in Jungle. The Zone EP, his first full EP release as DJ Trace since 2003, dropped in 2018 and since then has been firing on all cylinders, releasing a prolific number of projects on his own labels as well as others, including Deep Jungle & CNVX. The Nine Windows project with Kid Drama continues to receive wide spread notoriety and his highly anticipated collaboration with HLZ ‘Raptor EP’ is set for release on Metalheadz in 2024.His national DSCI4 tour kicks off in May, with stops scheduled in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane & Sydney and we can assure the Perth show at 201 Below will be one for our history books.

DJ Trace Biography

DJ Trace was an early member of the tight-knit crew of producers constituting popular techstep drum'n'bass label No U-Turn. His first crack at broad exposure came through the compilation "Techsteppin'" released on Emotif in 1995. It contained a number of tracks licensed from the No U-Turn studios, and helped seed a new direction in drum'n'bass, one characterized by heavy use of electronics, cavernous beats and basslines, and the dystopian histrionics that have since become trademarks of the No U-Turn/Nu Black sound.

"The Mutant" (a remix of T.Power's "Mutant Jazz"), was released on Emotif in 1995. It also spawned a remix of its own, "Mutant Revisited". The remix became one of the most influential trial runs for the so-called "reece" bassline that would later become hugely popular within the genre.

Today, Trace runs DSCI4, a label that has pushed through producers like Black Sun Empire, SKC and Chris.SU as well as having legendary names like Bad Company, Kemal & Rob Data, Stakka & Skynet and Optical in its back catalogue.
