Brian James and The Great Unknown Biography

“The strong offering should help Brian James and the Great Unknown make their mark on the northwest music scene and take those next big steps on their journey.” – Northwest Music Scene

Seattle-based band Brian James and The Great Unknown is a five-piece comprised of Brian James on guitar/vocals, Tyler Rogers on saxophone(s), Chris DeFalco on bass, Cyrus Zerbe on drums, and Leana Critchell on keyboard. Taking influence from many different styles such as R&B, Soul, Rock, Jazz, Pop, and Country, they seamlessly blend the like together to make a sound that is uniquely their own. Their first-ever release titled Journey of a Thousand Miles is an eight-song EP that has an eclectic but cohesive sound with thought-provoking lyrics, clever melodies, and hard-hitting grooves. In June of 2021, they released a new single titled Brand New.

“Albums like this are few and far between, in my opinion. Already has a timeless quality to it.” – Inside MusiCast

The lyrics are based off of Brian’s lived experiences and deal with issues that anyone can relate with, such as adversity, materialism, and love. Rick Bowen from North West Music Scene says, “Saxophonist Tyler Rogers plays the perfect foil, adding gritty lead lines that spice up the funky grooves laid down by drummer Cyrus Zerbe.

It is safe to say these five are quickly making a name for themselves. In December 2019 and February 2020, they played to two sold-out crowds at Bake’s Place. In 2019, they were also selected as “Album pick of the year” by Inside MusiCast with Loretta Sassaman saying “Congratulations to creating a debut album that for some artists, takes several releases to even get to. This is a fine project.” Throughout the Summer of 2021, BJATGU performed for roughly 5,000 new and familiar faces for various events such as the Kirkland Summer Concert Series, Mcmillan Farms Hot Sauce Festival, and the Des Moines City Concert Series. They also performed to a sold-out crowd on the main stage at the Chateau Ste. Michelle.
