About this concert
Johny Brown and The Band Of Holy Joy made three superb, critically acclaimed albums for Rough Trade, and more recently, having reformed, released more albums via superb post punk heritage specialists Tiny Global Records. The band's music includes elements of post-punk, folk rock, European cabaret, reflective instrumentation and epic pop, with Jacques Brel, Bertolt Brecht, Coleridge and David Peace identified as influences. They have also been likened to David Bowie and Pere Ubu and Jhnny's songs have been identified as "urban folk".Rob Young, in the book Rough Trade, described his music as "a bohemian mix of inner city guignol, Brechtian street song, and soaring romanticism". Left Ventricle-On first impression a heavy grunge band with a slomo Nirvana meets Sabbath approach that works well?only with slinky neo blues lead git twiddling on top. Then they go all jazz chords and skipping riddims. Strange concoction but an interesting and compelling one . Mick Lewis is currently recording his 2nd LP with Khari Mateen (film composer, cellist, and producer with The Roots, Jill Scott, Son Little), Arjun Agerwala (sound engineer for Smashing Pumpkins & Fountains of Wayne) plus the vocal talents of Joshie Jo Armstead and her daughter Chandra (toured with Whitney Houston), plus horn arrangements by Broadway veteran Mark Thrasher (toured with Barbara Streisand), and drums from Lemonheads/Swervedriver drummer Mikey Jones. So we're stoaked to have Mick come play this wee Xmastide hinterland show with us tonight. Mick just performed at The Bowery Electric in NYC opening for singer-songwriter-actor Peter Salett (Wet Hot American Summer; Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Keeping the Faith) Bloody Bollocks - and now for something completely different, but still right up our Strasse. Spiritual Khristmas brothers to The Kunts perhaps, expect an incisive set of Satirical, Comical punk rock, as evinced by their rather wonderful album on Bandcamp, Now That's What I Call Bollocks. Superb. We Got Killers - drawing the musica lines between all the above and taking it to the dancefloor 11pm to 2am.

The Band of Holy Joy Biography

Formed from the ashes of an unrecorded ’77 punk band, Speed, Band Of Holy Joy’s initial musical forays were largely in the domain of industrial bricolage and occasional bursts of madness. By the time they began releasing records under their own name in the 1980s, the band’s humanist tendencies came to the fore, with astounding portraits of people on the periphery, resulting in such classics as Rosemary Smith, Mad Dot and Don’t Stick Knives In Babbies Heads. The sharp sensibilities of founder and leader Johnny Brown eventually led to a star-making deal with Rough Trade, a few near hits and career momentum shattered when the label collapsed mere days after what might have been the band’s breakthrough album.

Slowly, a new Band Of Holy Joy has blossomed. Despite all the expected rock ’n roll trappings - Great shows! Killer tunes! Special guests! - the band operate, well, differently. In some aspects, they’re an art collective. Inspired by the possibilities which burst forth after punk, the band’s expression takes many forms. Visual artist Inga Tillere plays a large role in shaping the band’s aesthetic and live events, and in musical foil James Stephen Finn, Johnny’s poetic vision transcends expectations without resorting to desperate reaches into esoterica. Funambulist We Love You may be the first true literary examination of the malaise set forth by Brexit, Trump, the rise of the far-right and a general disenfranchisement from most post-war liberal values. It rarely names any names, and it’s far from strident, but it’s undeniably a record forged by 2017.
