Iain McLaughlin & The Outsiders Biography

IAIN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS Despite Inverness being one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, it’s only recently that the music scene has truly burst into life. Shaking preconceptions and setting out a glorious statement of intent come the aptly named Outsiders, spearheading a burgeoning musical scene in the UK’s most northerly city. The band return, fresh from time spent fostering progression. Progression in what they stand for, and how they deliver that intent. The follow-up and next step from 2012’s full-length debut album "WeAreAllOutsiders", ‘is Falling Through the Dark’. A brand new record, which encapsulates the pensive style of songwriter Mclaughlin's admissions, hopes and fears and distills them into a broadening aural landscape. The bed-rock of that landscape remains comprised of a carefully selected rhythm section. The sub-assault of Dave Ramsay on bass and drummer Russell Montgomery's sniping percussive onslaught combine to frame the wraith-like melodies of Paul Elliott’s lead guitar. The addition of fifth member and multi-instrumentalist Alasdair Duncan adds new sonic dimensions, which Mclaughlin has deftly employed both in the studio and the live environment with the dynamic addition of piano and harmony vocals. It’s the live environment where the band’s reputation has been earned. Delivering layer upon layer of sound and melody, infused with a darker, dirtier aesthetic. At the core, a sense of unabashed honesty that defines them not only as a group, but all five as individuals. It’s a sound that also draws on the big skies and wide horizons of the North of Scotland, music that could only come from where it was made. Having played throughout the UK including stand-out performances at festivals such as Rockness, Belladrum, Wizard and Go North in addition to slots at world renowned venues like Glasgow’s King Tut’s, Liverpool’s Cavern Club and Death 2 Disco at the Notting Hill Arts Club in London as well as high profile supports for Status Quo, John Fratelli, Reverend & Makers, Glasvegas and Turin Brakes among others, the band are eager and excited about the opportunity to continue taking their unique sound and passion for music to new audiences . Iain Mclaughlin – Vocals/Guitar, Paul Elliott – Guitar, Dave Ramsay – Bass, Russell Montgomery – Drums/Percussion and Alasdair Duncan - Keys/Guitar/Vocals.
