About this concert
Name many of the most notable recordings and/or performers in Irish music and it's a fair bet that Irish guitar wizard John Doyle had something to do with them - Liz Carroll; Eileen Ivers; Karan Casey; Solas; Michael Black; Mary Black; the trio of McCusker, McGoldrick and Doyle; and now Usher's Island (Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Mike McGoldrick, Paddy Glackin and John Doyle), not to mention the hugely popular Transatlantic Sessions. This list is a veritable who's who of the greatest names in Irish music, and these are just a very few of the stellar artists for whom John Doyle's signature guitar sound, singing or songwriting is essential. Impossibly in demand in the studio and on the road, immensely talented and blessed with an acute ear, a wicked sense of rhythm and seemingly endless stream of magic in his playing, composing, performing and producing, John Doyle is solidly establishing himself as one of the most versatile, creative and prolific voices in folk and traditional Irish music. He's the guitarist of choice for not only Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter but also the great Chicago-born Irish fiddler Liz Carroll and bluegrass stars Tim O?Brien and Dirk Powell. "Doyle on guitar has risen to a level occupied by him alone. No one in Irish traditional music is a better guitarist than him right now" (The Wall Street Journal). "A complete rhythm section all on his own" (Chicago Tribune) "More talent than anybody deserves to have all to themselves" (Philadelphia News).

John Doyle Biography

John Doyle (b. Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish musician. For four years he served as acoustic guitarist with the Irish/American band Solas, and is also an active solo artist. He has written many traditional-sounding songs and has collaborated with Kate Rusby.

Doyle has also producing credits, as well as performing, on the solo CDs of the singer from Cherish the Ladies, Heidi Talbot's, Distant Future, on which she sings his composition, "I dream of you", his current touring partner Liz Carroll's CDs, and his father Sean Doyle's CD, The Light and the Half Light. Also Karan Casey, on her solo CD, Songlines, listen to his use of a volume pedal and his acoustic guitar on the song "She is like the Swallow."

Doyle is a highly accomplished guitarist with a trademark style for backing up other musicians. A left handed player, his style involves the use of bass string damping with the heel of the left hand combined with a constant, metronome-like strumming pattern and nimble movement up and down the neck with the right hand to incorporate bass lines and chordal variations. Combined with other dynamic techniques such as string choking with the right hand, the resulting sound is full and highly rythmical.

Doyle plays guitar in many different tunings, but is perhaps best known for using the 'Dropped D' tuning (DADGBE) for backing up other musicians.
