Zongo All-Stars

FUNCTUS:Formed in the mid-nineties out of the popular San Luis Obispo band, Mozaic, Functus was inspired by the genre-bending sounds of the 90s San Francisco jazz-funk scene, Medeski, Martin and Wood, 1970s electric Miles Davis, James Brown, and Parliament/Funkadelic. Guitarist Jacob Odell, bassist Dylan Johnson, and New Orleans-based drummer and percussionist Steve Campbell forge an intense jazz/funk/rock hybrid with Indian, African, and Cuban music thrown in the mix. After much success in the local scene and beyond, the members of the band moved on to other areas of the country, now converging for rare performances when proximity allows. ZONGO ALL-STARS:Also formed out of the Mozaic band in the nineties, Zongo All-Stars formed in 2007 when bassist Dylan Johnson and guitarist Jacob Odell returned from the East Coast with degrees in jazz from Berkeley School of Music, SUNY Purchase, and a ton of experience working the New York City scene. Most members of Mozaic reunited to form Zongo All-Stars, the Central Coast powerhouse dance band, featuring bandleader Andrew Wise on sax, flutes, and vocals, Paul Irving on trumpet, Dylan Johnson on bass, Jacob Odell on guitar, Justin Perkins on steel drum and percussion, and Jennings Jacobsen on drums. This show also brings back original Mozaic percussionist Isaac Horton and long-time collaborator Tim Costa on percussion. The grooves are infectious and the original stylings bring together many influences from the Caribbean to West Africa to the Middle East and beyond.
