This very special enJOY Jazz presentation features: Dena DeRose – piano, Sherrie Maricle – percussion, and Noriko Ueda – bass. Born in Binghamton, Dena DeRose is an acclaimed jazz pianist, singer and educator who has released seven solo albums. It’s no small accomplishment to be called “The most creative and compelling singer- pianist since Shirley Horn”, but that’s exactly how Joel Siegel of the Washington City Paper described Dena DeRose. She has brought her signature vitality and innovation to performances alongside the likes of Ray Brown, Clark Terry, Marian McPartland, Benny Golson, Scott Hamilton, John Scofield, Benny Green, Ray Drummond, Houston Person, Tootie Heath, Deborah Brown, Ken Peplowski, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Kenny Burrell, David ‘Fathead’ Newman, Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Mark Murphy, Marvin Stamm, and many, many others. She is also a busy freelance performer, a published composer/arranger and a dedicated educator, clinician, guest conductor and soloist. With her bands Sherrie has performed at many of the world’s most acclaimed music venues and festivals, from Lincoln Center to the Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl, to Jazz Festivals in Germany, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Ireland, England, Croatia, Japan, Vietnam, and Israel and beyond. Additionally, Sherrie and DIVAwere featured at the 2017 NEA Jazz Master’s Awards Ceremony, the soundtrack for the NBC-Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular; on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, on TCM’s televised broadcast of the 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center and NHK Japan’s New York Jazz. Her interest in music began early in her life, studying classical piano at the age of 4. At 16, she began playing the electric bass. At age 18, she began her career with the upright bass. Noriko was the B.E.S.T. scholarship recipient for the Berklee College of Music in Boston where she majored in Jazz Composition, graduating in 1997. Noriko has performed at many historical jazz venues include “Carnegie Hall”, “Blue Note New York”, “Jazz at Lincoln Center – Dizzy’s Club”, “John F. Kennedy Center”, “Hollywood Bowl”, “Birdland”, “Small’s” and “Blue Note Tokyo“. She has performed, toured and recorded with various groups including the legendary “Frank Wess Quintet” and his Nonet, “Kenny Barron Quintet”, “ARTEMIS”, “Ted Rosenthal Trio”, “The DIVA Jazz Orchestra”, “Five Play”, “Grady Tate Band”, “Harry Whitaker Band”, Makoto Ozone and Terumasa Hino. DENA DEROSE
Jazz Vocalist and Pianist

As a leader she has 13 recordings to her credit, her CD’s on the Maxjazz label “A Walk In the Park”, “Live at Jazz Standard-Vol.1”, and “Live at Jazz Standard-Vol. 2” have all received rave reviews, and garnered Grammy considerations. Her solo recording on Maxjazz "Travelin' Light" was released in 2012 to many positive reviews. More recently, DeRose's release on HighNote Records "We Won't Forget You...An Homage To Shirley Horn", garnered much attention and is still a 'project' that is requested for certain performances. Her latest recording, 'United', features her trio of more than 14+ years (Martin Wind and Matt Wilson), along with special guests Ingrid Jensen and Peter Bernstein.


Her trio has been featured at the annual IAJE (now the JEN) jazz education conference (New York City, Long Beach, Toronto, Dallas, and Reno), the Monterey Jazz Festival (CA), the North Sea Jazz Festival (the Netherlands), The Ancona Jazz Festival (Italy), The Red Sea Jazz Festival (Israel), The Estoril Jazz Festival (Portugal), The Stanford Jazz Festival (CA), The San Jose Festival (CA), The Tel Aviv Opera House (Israel), the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Jazz Standard (NYC), the Blue Note (NYC), Jazz Standard (NYC), Birdland (NYC), Mezzrow/Smalls (NYC), Body and Soul and Swing Hall (Tokyo), The Jazz Cruise, and the ‘Annual Jazz At Sea’ Jazz Cruise, and many other jazz venues around the globe.

An experienced music educator for over 30 years, DeRose is currently heading the Vocal Jazz Department of the "KUG Jazz Institute" at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. She travels Europe, The U.S., Scandinavia, and Asia giving workshops, master classes, and private lessons. Dena has been on the faculty of the Stanford Summer Jazz Workshop for the past 21 years. In 2007, Ms DeRose was chosen as a Fulbright Specialist through the US Embassy and was 'Artist in Residence' at the first Jazz Institute in Izmir, Turkey. She is available for residencies and masterclasses world-wide.
