David Grubbs

We are beyond delighted to welcome David Grubbs to Cambridge for a rare intimate solo show at The Blue Moon, preceded by a lecture hosted at Anglia Ruskin University. A central figure in the development of avant-garde rock music since the 90s, Grubbs was a key member of the groups Gastr del Sol, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait. His collaboration with Jim O?Rourke in Gastr del Sol in essence invented the concept of post-rock. He has since released fourteen solo albums and appeared on more than 200 releases. He has performed with Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Luc Ferrari, Will Oldham, Loren Connors, Royal Trux, the Red Krayola, and many many others. In addition to his work as a composer and musician, David Grubbs is an academic and writer. He is Distinguished Professor of Music at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, CUNY. At Brooklyn College he also teaches in the MFA programs in Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) and Creative Writing. He is the author of the trilogy of book-length prose poems Good night the pleasure was ours, The Voice in the Headphones, and Now that the audience is assembled (Duke University Press). Other publications include Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, the Sixties, and Sound Recording, as well as the collaborative artists? books Simultaneous Soloists (with Anthony McCall, Pioneer Works Press) and Projectile (with Reto Geiser and John Sparagana, Drag City). He is known for his ongoing cross-disciplinary collaborations with poet Susan Howe and visual artists Anthony McCall and Angela Bulloch. His work has been presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou. David Grubbs is a grant recipient from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, a member of the advisory board of the journal Sound American, a member of the board of directors of Blank Forms, and director of the Blue Chopsticks record label. This event is presented in collaboration with Anglia Ruskin University, who will also host a lecture by Grubbs. Titled ?Three Experiments in Music Writing?, he will present excerpts from his trilogy of book-length prose poems Good night the pleasure was ours, The Voice in the Headphones, and Now that the audience is assembled, together with a discussion of the nexus of music and literature, including reflections on his ongoing collaboration with the poet Susan Howe.
