About this concert
75 DOLLAR BILL
Since their first (and only) Cambridge show for us back in 2017, Brooklyn?s 75 Dollar Bill have grown in stature to become one of the most respected units currently working in experimental rock. We are delighted to bring them back as part of this brief transatlantic trip.
Since forming some time in 2012, 75 Dollar Bill have mastered stripping down rock & roll to its elemental parts and rebuilding it in their own image. Percussionist Rick Brown eschews the drum kit, instead beating out lurching and insistent rhythms on a deeply resonating plywood box, accentuated with shakers, bells, and fragments of scrap metal. Over this, guitarist Che Chen teases out longform modulating riffs of modal blues on heavily-modified 12-string or quartertone instruments, with additional extended wailings from Brown on homemade reed instruments.
Augmented by a rotating cast of horn and string players as the 75 Dollar Bill Little Big Band, the duo still maintain the ensemble?s long-standing links with New York?s social music and community action movements. Musically, the band?s hypnotic, evolving grooves exist in a liminal state between Downtown minimalism, juke-joint boogie, African desert blues, free jazz, proto-punk and ecstatic Arabic chaabi.
If you have even the slightest interest in ?other? music, catching 75 Dollar Bill is of paramount importance.
