Lastlings Biography

Lastlings are back with Get What You Want - a fresh offering building on their ethereal sound and detailed production, with an accompanying music video.

Currently based in Melbourne, the Japanese-Australian siblings found inspiration for their new works in the studio on the Gold Coast:

Josh: “We spent a week writing in 2021 and this was one of the first songs that came from the session. We had two rooms. One writing room for Amy with a piano and one for me where I made the instrumental.”

On Get What You Want, Lastlings arrive with new elements to their signature sound - harder hitting lyrics, layered over Amy’s lush vocals, and Josh’s dynamic synthwork fans have come to distinctly love. Lastlings brought in Alex Metric for additional production on the track, following his work with the likes of Dua Lipa, Diplo and Foals.

Amy says of the song’s meaning: “It explores mental health and the relationship that I have with myself. It’s about putting myself out there and not letting doubt get in the way of what I truly want. ‘I’ve got a lot of enemies that live inside my head’. This song isn’t about love for another person, it’s about my relationship with myself. ‘You’ refers to a darker version of myself that I am trying to fight and overcome.”

The video for GWYW goes hand in hand with the song as it explores an abstract interpretation of spaces inside the mind. Each space represents a different state, a different struggle. The underlying message remains positive, a hopeful outlook in an imperfect world.

Their 2020 debut First Contact continues to be well-loved around the world. An album where the duo looked to Tokyo and its surroundings, taking inspiration from their heritage and the country’s futuristic charm. This time, they build on this curiosity and move towards the unknown. Expect sweeping soundscapes felt within your chest, expressed through a visually surreal palette.

Since First Contact, Lastlings have taken their music to the world. Completing their debut, sold-out run in North America, plus a unique stop at Sundream in Mexico, playing beachside sets with their label heads RÜFÜS DU SOL. Lastlings recently completed an LA weekender for 88rising’s Head In The Clouds event. Lastlings’ live shows grow more complex with hauntingly beautiful visual elements to complement their sound.

GWYW is an ambitious work combining sound, art and reflection. It’s an auspicious first glimpse into a universe, built by Amy and Josh Dowdle, and a promise of what’s yet to come.
