About this concert
Doors: 9PM / Show: 10PM / 21+THE ROOF DOGS The Roof Dogs are a Chicago, IL rock band formed by songwriters and guitarists Andrew Marczak and Jesse Cheshire. Joined on bass by Sean Maher and with Jack Brereton on drums, the group has established themselves with their special blend of new wave, post-punk, and classic alternative rock sounds. While drawing from a wide swath of rocks rich pantheon, the band maintains their own distinct personality and style in large part due to the idiosyncratic songwriting of Cheshire and Marczak combining with Maher and Breretons groove-infused rhythm section. A song may begin with a razor-sharp post punk riff only to develop into the playful psychedelia of a sunshiney chorus, or a softly sung melody might descend into sonic madness as their proclivity for the rough, rowdy, and loud takes over. The Roof Dogs debut full length record, Here You Are (out June 2023 via Earth Libraries), is their most concise statement to date. Written and recorded primarily during the harrowing years of 2020/21, Here You Are finds the band exploring themes of isolation, entropy, nihilism, and existential boredom, but with a lyrical playfulness and wit that does not bend to the heaviness of their themes. While still happy to distort anything and everything, the Roof Dogs round out their sound with frequent use of synthesis, organ, and acoustic piano, widening their palette and leading to a record with a variety of sonic landscapes.

The Roof Dogs Biography

Small towns, despite their absence of big city color, often provide an outlet for pent up creativity. Originally formed in Granville, Ohio, the Roof Dogs' songwriter/guitarists Andrew Marczak and Jesse Cheshire met playing songs at a vintage shop/taco bar. The band's music still recalls this formative setting. Drawing from an eclectic roster of influences ranging from the country rock of Gram Parsons, art rock legends such as John Cale and Television, to the demented college rock of the Soft Boys, the Roof Dogs write rock and roll through the frame of a bygone era. The band is joined by Jesse's high school classmate Sean Maher on the bass guitar and Columbus native Walker Andersen on drums, punctuating their sound with a melodic and shapely rhythm section.

The band recently relocated to Chicago from their previous home of Columbus, Ohio. They have shared stages with the likes of shame, Vundabar, Richard Lloyd of Television, Bellows, and Chris Farren. Having released 2 EPs in 2018, and their single “Six Blocks” last year, the band is currently working on two more singles for the spring, and a TBA release for the fall.

“a band whose sound has remained in constant motion, veering from 1960s folk-indebted numbers and Americana to wispy indie-rock jams that share at least some DNA with Neutral Milk Hotel” - Columbus Alive
