About this concert
Join us for an evening of free live music with Emma Cook and Evangeline Gentle, with a special opening set by Kalyca Brown. ABOUT EMMA COOK: Folk-pop artist Emma Cook has a glacially pure voice and years of life experiences to write about. At the heart of it all she is a storyteller, with music that plays between the lines of folk and chamber pop influenced from her youth – listening to mixtapes that included Ani Difranco, Tracy Chapman and Madonna. Emma is set to release her 5th album Fight Left In Me on November 4th, 2021. Produced by Andrew Rasmussen (touring keyboardist for the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen, Wake Owl, Twin Bandit, Hannah Georgas, Hey Ocean) the album takes a deep dive into the nooks & crannies, and under the radar experiences of (mostly) women who are in the time of their life when their own personal identity is often tangled up with those around them. With Emma’s trademark vocal and harmony layering and gorgeously textured production, the album is her most extrospective so far, bringing the stories of those around her to life with an aching honesty. The road to this new album was definitely not linear. In 2013 she was forced to take a 3-year hiatus from music following a bad head injury. In 2018 she came back strong with the album Living Proof distilling her hardships into a collection of stirring and deeply earnest pop balladry. The album landed her in the finals of the CBC Searchlight competition and a headlining show at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. She was chosen to represent Canada on a musical trade mission in South America in 2019, with official showcases at SIM Sao Paolo and Fluviale Festivals. Emma has logged 100’s of shows across Canada, the US and the UK, including showcases at NXNE, SXSW, CMW and Indie Week. Her four full length releases have garnered fantastic reviews and sought the attention of CBC Radio and SiriusXM The Verge. ABOUT EVANGELINE GENTLE: Evangeline Gentle is a Scottish-Canadian internationally acclaimed folk-pop songwriter, performer and vocalist based in Ontario, Canada. Contemplative and affecting, Evangeline’s lyrics evoke lush emotional landscapes within the listener and seek to unite audiences with a sense of “sameness”. A celebration of queerness and queer culture is woven throughout Gentle’s upcoming release Where The Diamonds Are, best heard on singles “Gay Bar” which debuted on CBC q, and “Bad Girls”. On this she says “While many have never been to a gay bar, most know the euphoria of getting dressed up to go out dancing with friends. We are inextricably connected by our shared emotional, human experience. I love that songs remind us of this.” Produced by Jim Bryson (Kathleen Edwards), and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Philip Shaw Bova (Bahamas, Feist), her 2020 debut self-titled release earned international praise. Gentle was interviewed by legendary host Scott Simon on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday, appeared in Forbes, and received radio play on BBC, CBC, SiriusXM and more. Evangeline supported headliner Donovan Woods at the 2021 Mariposa Folk Festival, with other standout performances including those at Maverick Festival (UK) and Static Roots Festival (Germany) in 2022. She has supported acts such as Kathleen Edwards, Tim Baker, Begonia, Basia Bulat, Craig Cardiff, Whitehorse and Rae Spoon. Evangeline’s highly anticipated sophomore release arrives in 2023.

Emma Cook Biography

“It’s tough not to be won over by Cook’s luminous approach to crafting songs – a refreshing change of pace when so many artists try so hard to be, well, pretty much the same.” RED DEER EXPRESS

2016 FACTOR Juried Sound Recording recipient Emma Cook combines a powerful and haunting voice reminiscent of Sarah McLachan with the song stylings of Feist. She also knows what it means to struggle. The Toronto indie-folk singer was well on her way to making a name for herself before a falling tree branch caused a serious head injury and forced her to take a hiatus from music to focus on recovery. After a three year battle with Post-Concussive Syndrome, Emma drew 2016 to a close with the release of her third album ‘Same Old Song, produced by Mitch Girio (Emma-Lee’s Never Just a Dream).

Before her injury, Emma had logged over 100 shows across Canada, the US and the UK and had official showcases at NXNE, CMW & Indie Week. She was a 2008 Toronto Independent Music Awards nominee and received an Ontario Arts Council grant to record her second album “Hit & Run.” Written and co-produced by Emma, both of her albums have garnered fantastic reviews and sought the attention of campus radio, CBC and the Verge on XM Satellite Radio. The Ontario Arts Council again backed the young artist, awarding her an International touring grant which took her from Toronto down to Mississippi and back in Feb and March 2009, with stops at SXSW, and NYC’s famed Bitter End.

In early 2017 Emma began writing songs again. “They just started pouring out of me” she said, “I am channeling all of the loss and frustration, all of the pain and hardship of the last few years.” Thanks to a recent FACTOR grant, Emma recorded her fourth album with producer Dean Drouillard (Royal Wood), the first single of which made her finalist in the CBC Searchlight competition, and has reached 3k streams on Spotify in just a few weeks. Emma embarks on a cross Canada album release tour in March/April 2018.
