The Blue Aeroplanes Biography
The Blue Aeroplanes are Bristol’s most successful guitar band, an art-‐rock institution acknowledged as an influence on REM, Radiohead and countless 80’s/90’s post-‐punk/alternative bands. Since their last album ‘Anti-‐Gravity’ caused a bit of a stir in 2012 by being released on vinyl only (several long-‐term fans quit the band’s chat room in protest), the Blue Aeroplanes have juggled other commitments (running the Fleece, being Head of Songwriting at Bimm Bristol, solo albums, overdubs for Hollywood movies, etc) with recording their most mainstream album since ‘Beatsongs’ in 1992. Recorded at Vale Studios in Evesham, a residential country house with vintage gear and a Neave desk, by T.J. Allen, one of the best up-‐and-‐coming engineer/producers in the country, the album contains ten poem/songs for 2016. Recent guitarists Bec Jevons and Mike Youe kick-‐started the whole project, combining with original members Gerard and John Langley, long-‐term stalwarts Gerard Starkie (formerly of Witness) and Chris Sharp to produce an album that is genuinely unclassifiable. Sleaford Mods, Courtney Barnett and George the Poet collide with Lou Reed, REM, Fairport Convention, Sex Pistols, Captain Beefheart and Patti Smith (not to mention 90’s dance-‐pop). With original hyper-‐manic dancer Wojtek Dmochowski still ripping up the stage (and ripping out guitar leads), everything’s different and everything’s the same. Still nothing like anything else.
