Helm Biography
HELM are a five piece progressive, post-rock/metal band from the Gold Coast, Australia. Formed in 2008 by ex-Tension singer/guitarist Lucas Stone and drummer, Mat Wilton, the band hit the ground running with their first album ‘Vol. I...Keelhaul’, which garnered rave reviews from local and international music press upon its release. In 2009 HELM released their second full-length album in the form of ‘Vol. 2...The Winter March’, spawning the crushing second single ‘Watch It Burn’. Extensive national touring once again backed up the album, including a slew of support slots for bands such as Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus and The Butterfly Effect. In 2010, they released a cover version of the iconic Icehouse track ‘Great Southern Land’, with the blessing and admiration of the song’s creator Iva Davies. The band followed this up with two single’s, 2011’s ‘Home’ and 2012’s ‘Bullets’, the latter featuring Lucius Borich (Cog, Floating Me) on drumming duties. 2012 saw the band begin to solidify its current line-up and commence work on their third record. With fresh blood in the band, in the form of drummer Fabio Lagana, bassist Rory Swane and guitarist Ryan ‘Ruckus’ Lucas, the new members influence could be heard immediately, joining the bands original members Lucas Stone and Dario Lagana, to deliver an album of epic proportions. The song structures are more complex, the technicality of the playing is stepped up a notch, and the renewed energy within the band shines through to create an intelligent, well thought-out Aussie prog-rock album. At it’s heaviest, the crushing riffs weigh down on the listener with the weight of the world, while on the other end of the scale, the lighter more melodic sections inspire hope, and overflow with a maturity not yet heard on earlier HELM releases. Vocalist/guitarist Lucas Stone bares his soul on ‘Vol. III’, taking the listener on a journey through themes of addiction, reckless abandon, redemption, love, loss, family, and the constant struggles & achievements we all encounter in our day-to-day lives. His beautifully descriptive lyrics shine on their latest effort, delivered with a raw honesty, rarely found in today’s modern heavy music scene. The first single ‘Bermuda’ is accompanied by a visually stunning film-clip that showcases the band’s new line-up and sound in all its glory. 2014 started off with a bang for the band, with a last minute call up to perform at Brisbanes Soundwave Festival, filling the slot for ex-Metallica bass players band, Newsted, after they pulled out of the festival line-up. SW14 gave the band incredible exposure, consequently opening them up to a whole new audience of heavy music fans. The rest of the year will see HELM continue to tour Australia in support of their latest release, with plans to take the band overseas in 2015. HELM are a truly unique heavy-rock band, a rewarding musical experience driven by burning passion, raw emotion and a relentless dedication to the art of creating music with true meaning and value.
