About this concert
On their fifth album Django Django shapeshifted again with the help of a crew of friends and collaborators – listen out for bluesy pop, Afro acid and piano rave. Self Esteem tags in for ‘Complete Me’, a rough-and-tumble round of 1990s-inspired breakbeat, and the band get more back-up across the album from Jack Peñate, Stealing Sheep and Toya Delazy. Off Planet was conceptualised by Django Django co-founder and powerhouse Dave Maclean, buzzing on ufology as a way to go beyond, to bring new voices, new rhythms, new experimentation into play, and effectively to deconstruct the band’s identity. Released in four parts, each as a separate ‘planet’, Off Planet is the biggest, boldest and most varied statement the band have made, with a cavalcade of mainstream and underground stars bringing entirely new creative angles into play. Despite at times not sounding like anything on their previous releases, Off Planet is very much still recognisably Django Django, a band whose entire career has been about evading and growing beyond scenes, sounds, expectations, influences and their own perception of themselves.
