About this concert
IMP are completely stoked to announce that the wonderful Nina Nastasia has confirmed a solo show with us in Aberdeen. To boost this event even further, Rick Redbeard will be the support for this show. Nina Nastasia (Temporary Residence) Nina Nastasia's rare gift of a voice is an intimate, winged presence that is able to either freeze or melt your heart; that can powerfully soar and twist, or brush ultra-gently against you, suddenly summoning goose bumps. Mojo commented on its ability to "suck the air out of the room". Picking over themes of love, longing and loss, childhood, dreams and human dramas, her beautifully concise, hook-laden songwriting and the spare arrangements of her band have a certain gritty, rustic charm and intensity. Simultaneously tough and fragile, her songs crackle and smolder with an intimate emotional honesty and a dark undertow. For full details of her career to date please read this wiki page Nina Nastasia - Wikipedia Nina was the only support on Mogwai's 16 date 2022 theatre tour of North America. "The audience was ?completely silent? for her sets", says Mogwai?s Stuart Braithwaite. What the papers say about her 1st LP since 2010 ?Riderless Horse obviously isn?t an easy listen. At times ? as on ?Go Away ? it gets dirgy. But its truth-hounding also delivers poetry and restful release.? ? The Independent ***** ?It?s difficult to detach this record from the harrowing specificity of its backstory, yet Riderless Horse never makes you feel like an intruder.? ? Mojo ***** ?The cult American singer-songwriter endured 25 years of abuse at the hands of her partner, an experience wrenchingly recorded in her first album in 12 years.? ? The Observer ***** Nina Nastasia: Riderless Horse review ? devastatingly powerful songs of survival | Pop and rock | The Guardian ?The album never breaks its focus on Nastasia?s voice, which is as raw and radiant as ever. On ?You Were So Mad,? it soars with defiant fury.? ? Pitchfork (7.8) ?Riderless Horse is far from an easy listen for obvious reasons. But hearing the 56-year-old Nastasia describe and attempt to understand these stark events is never less than compelling.? ? The Telegraph **** Full Press Release HERE: https://conta.cc/3j1I471 Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it?s the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn?t produce. I haven?t made an album since 2010. I decided to stop pursuing music several years after my sixth record, Outlaster, because of unhappiness, overwhelming chaos, mental illness, and my tragically dysfunctional relationship with Kennan. Creating music had always been a positive outlet during difficult times, but eventually it became a source of absolute misery. Kennan, a cat, and I lived in a studio apartment in NYC for 25 years, finding ways to survive while making records and going on tours. Our apartment was the place where people would come stay, eat, drink, play music, and use our tub. It was quite a home we had created, but it was decaying steadily from the moment we moved in, and in the end, it was as if black mold was growing beneath the surface, undetected, and the two of us were dying and getting too weak to ever leave. We loved each other. We were each other?s family, but there was ongoing abuse, control and manipulation. We hid. We didn?t want anyone to see how ugly things could get, so we increasingly isolated from our friends and family. We were lost. On January 26, 2020, I made the decision to separate and live apart, and on January 27, Kennan died by suicide. What a thing, suicide. I can only feel sadness and guilt about it. Maybe I?ll have other reactions to it later on. Riderless Horse documents the grief, but it also marks moments of empowerment and a real happiness in discovering my own capability. Steve Albini produced this record with me, and Greg Norman assisted. The three of us are old friends, and we did a field recording in a guesthouse built like a lighthouse that two very dear friends of mine have in Esopus, NY. It was exactly the right environment to work on this record. We all had meals together, cried, laughed, and told stories. It was perfect. It made me realize how much I love writing, playing and recording music. Terrible things happen. These were some terrible things. So, what to do ? learn something valuable, connect with people, move the fuck out of that apartment, remember the humor, find the humor, tell the truth, and make a record. I made a record. He has released 2 acclaimed albums under the Rick Redbeard moniker- 2013?s ?No Selfish Heart? and 2016?s ?Awake Unto?. Anthony?s songwriting melds a strong melodic sensibility with traditional folk themes like love, death, and the passing of time, and lyrics inspired by the natural world and his childhood growing up in the Aberdeenshire countryside. Since then he has released as many as four bandcamp releases. (check the link below) Its great to have Rick back at an IMP show after his fantastic set opening for the Kathryn Joseph album launch event in 2018 (as well as a couple of Phantom Band IMP shows) Rick Redbeard | Facebook Music | Rick Redbeard (bandcamp.com) Rick Redbeard (@RickRedbeard) / Twitter

Nina Nastasia Biography

Nina Nastasia is a New York City-based singer-songwriter. Her music is noted for an eclectic mix of folk delicacy and intricate chamber music arrangements worked out with her band and partner Kennan Gudjonsson.

Nastasia has released four albums so far, the first of which, Dogs, was initially released in 2000 in a minuscule edition of 1000 copies on Socialist Records. The album sold out quickly and her subsequent albums, The Blackened Air (2001) and Run to Ruin (2003) were released on indie label Touch and Go Records. The label also re-released Dogs in 2004. All three albums were recorded by Steve Albini.

Nastasia was a favorite of late BBC disc jockey John Peel and recorded six sessions for his shows. The last one was recorded with the help of Tuvan throat singing group Huun-Huur-Tu. Nastasia also contributed a song to the tribute compilation for Peel named "Bird of Cuzco". Two of Nastasia's songs made Peel's annual Festive Fifty: "Ugly Face" (ranked 4th in 2002) and "You, Her & Me" (13th in 2003).
