Sydney Cubit music Biography

Sydney Cubit possesses a maturity and quiet confidence that belies her young age of 17, and this depth no doubt seeps into every aspect of her music especially her songwriting. Cubit’s influences range from the eclectic sounds of indie artists to the powerhouse vocals of Adele and the bluesy grooves of John Mayer. “Growing up in a culture with access all kinds of music through the Internet, I have found a lot of my inspiration from indie artists like ZZ Ward and NeedtoBreathe.” Combine that hunger for musical variety with a passion to learn and a talent like Cubit’s…It’s a powerful mixture! Singing in the Lexington Children’s Choir from the age of five (including a performance at the Kennedy Center in D.C.), she quickly found her love of music and melody. While attending the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Cubit became restless with choral music and began looking for a way to sing her own style. It was then that she discovered her love for playing guitar and writing music, and the trajectory of her music career was forever changed. By age twelve, she was boldly playing open mic nights at local coffee shops in Lexington, Kentucky and soon after was booking her own shows. “I really wanted to play a real show at one of the venues but when the time came to ask the owner (or whoever booked talent), my Mom insisted that this was my dream and it would have to be me to make the ask. So I would take a deep breath and just walk right up, introduce myself and ask to be booked.” It worked, not only did she book those venues, she has she’s been able to play her music in several states in the Mid-West over the past two years. Sydney recently appeared on Season 7 of THE VOICE and was spotlighted on Woodsongs International Broadcast. She has earned spots on stage with both award-winning and up-and-coming acts including opening for Norah Jones (at the Kentucky Theater), Amy Grant, Erick Baker, Caroline Glaser, Walt Aldridge, Liz Longley, Bo Allen, Elliot Collett, Jenna Paulette, Hannah Ellis and Rick Huckaby. Her accomplishments include the 2011 Tennessee Country and Gospel Music Association’s “New Country Vocalist and Songwriter of the Year” and the 2012 National Association of Country Music International’s “Most Promising New Songwriter” and “Vocalist of the Year” awards. Cubit released an EP of original work in December 2012 entitled, "Pick Up the Pieces." She continues to play regularly throughout the region at festivals and coffee shops honing her performance skills and writing new material. When asked to categorize her music, “I don’t think my generation of musicians see distinct genres of music the same as previous generations did. If it’s good, why does it matter? But I guess if I had to put my music into a box, I’d pick a combination of indie, pop and folk.” Sometimes shy. Sometimes silly. Always Ambitious! Sydney Cubit’s quiet confidence doesn’t demand your attention but rather earns your respect one lyric at a time. www.sydneycubit.com
