About this concert
NATIVE SON // BLACK QUEER INTERSECTION TOWNHALL BLACK, QUEER, AND HERE. Native Son will host a Black Queer Intersection Townhall to explore what it means to be LGBTQ in the Black community today. This dialogue will center the experience of Black queer folx in America and invite other members of the Black community to participate. A panel of Black gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and gender non-conforming folx will share their stories, challenges, and hopes for the Black queer community. We will also invite other members of the Black community, Black cisgender women, Black cisgender men, Black faith leaders, Black activists, Black scientists, Black politicians/policy leaders, Black academics, Black thought leaders, and Black social media influencers to participate in an intimate and in-depth discussion about the intersection of Blackness and queerness and what we can learn from each other to co-exist, survive, and thrive.

queer Biography

Award-winning playwright and queer activist, Miss Hazel Jade returns to the stage with QUEER, a new LGBTQ musical that explores the complexities of gender and sexuality. This theatrical sensation features an ensemble who takes the stage to perform in truth.

"Coming out is just the beautiful beginning." Set in the Manhattan city limits of New York, QUEER unfolds the story of Mackenzie, a bisexual woman who has lost her voice in her marriage to Gizelle, a non-binary femme who owns Gender Threads, a custom clothing shop which employs Jessica, a transgender woman desiring to be loved for who she is. However, when an old friend comes to town after being dismissed from the military, the three will find that their lives will be transcended forever. QUEER celebrates acceptance, unity in chosen family, and the courage it takes to accept and love one’s self.

Choreographed by Gia Ryan (Trans Chorus Los Angeles); with a book by acclaimed queer activists and artists, Hazel Jade (Know Your Name) and Kasey Bryant (Louder Love); and original music and lyrics by Jerome Kurtenbach (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) - mixing electronic dance music, classic pop sounds and lyrical structure, traditional show tunes, and a live string orchestra. We invite you to experience the LGBTQ community like never before!
