About this concert
Athanase (pronounced ath-an-ouse) is a modern folk-rock band out of Hamilton, ON, whose music “... is as eternal as their name is unique” (Y108). The band's moniker is Greek for "immortal" — fitting for a band that uses songs to tell stories. The band bends genres combining folk, alternative, lots of ’50s rock n roll, and a little country to put together a simultaneously emotional and energetic experience. “We’ve been called ‘modern folk’, and I think that’s because we put on a fun live show - like the energy from a 1950’s rock n roll concert- while still keeping true to the elements we love from the folk genres,” says Athanase singer/songwriter Jason Baronette. The band’s debut EP Times Like These saw them get radio play and open for Irish international headliners Hermitage Green. They are gearing up for their second release, titled Between II Shores. Their influences rang from neo-roots giants like Jason Isbell, The Decemberists, and Bright Eyes, to Canadian heroes The Tragically Hip, alt-rockers Thrice, and pop icon Taylor Swift.
