Ayelet Rose Gottlieb Biography

Montreal-based, Jerusalem-born Vocalist and Composer Ayelet Rose Gottlieb creates in sophisticated simplicity. Described as an “intoxicating vocalist” (Vancouver Sun) and a “tour de force” (Jerusalem Post), Ayelet’s music is a “meeting of 1950s with 2050s” (Midwest Record). Acoustic and cutting edge, Ayelet’s sound is rooted in improvisation and jazz, blending middle-eastern traditions with wide open abstractions. Drawing inspiration from nature, intimacy and her nomadic urban living, Ayelet composes to contemporary women’s poetry, to ancient erotic texts, or wordlessly. As a founding member of Mycale a-cappella quartet, she has recorded two albums for John Zorn’s iconic “Masada Book II” series (Vol 13 & 25). With ten albums under her belt, Ayelet’s music has been featured on stages world-wide, including Novara JazzFest (Italy), WinterJazzFest (NYC), and Musica Sacra (Ecuador). She has performed Zorn’s music at the Metropolitan Museum, improvised with Bobby McFerrin at Carnegie Hall, sang lullabies with Anat Fort at the Vancouver JazzFest, premiered “Shiv’a” with ETHEL string quartet at the Park Ave Armory and played “Mayim Rabim” in an ancient cave in the Israeli desert. Her latest release, “Who Has Seen the Wind?” (Songlines, 2019) features Pneuma, her collaborative quartet with François Houle, Michael Winograd and James Falzone on clarinets. These days Ayelet is raising her three children and completing her recording project, “12 Lunar Meditations: Summoning the Witches”, featuring vocal sage Jay Clayton. She recently founded “Orchard of Pomegranates” - a series of house concerts and workshops in NDG, Montreal, in which she presents internationally acclaimed artists in an intimate salon setting, and leads “Singing with Freedom” workshops on a bi-weekly basis.
