Formados em 1996, os Fonzie começaram por contar com um trio, constituído por João Marques (bateria), David Marques (guitarra) e Hugo Maia (voz e guitarra). As inspirações iniciais para as primeiras criações, num misto de ska e de punk-pop, vieram de bandas como os Pennywise, NOFX ou Bad Religion. Os Fonzie constituiam-se em definitivo pouco depois, com o nome inspirado pelo personagem mais cool da série de tv "Happy Days". A entrada do baixista Daniel garantiu depois o elenco necessário para a gravação da primeira maqueta, que viu a luz do dia em 1997. O registo despertou mais tarde a atenção da editora "Ataque Sonoro", que acabou por convidar o colectivo de Lisboa a gravar um cd. Nessa mesma altura, Jorge substituiu Daniel no baixo.
"The Melo Pot", foi o título escolhido para um primeiro disco que reuniu dez temas da banda, tendo acabado por esgotar. As actuações ao vivo em defesa de "Melo Pot" sucederam-se, com constantes concertos bem sucedidos em espaços como o Ritz Clube. Em 2000, entrou Miguel Marques para o lugar de Jorge, e passados doze meses a banda partiu para a Suécia para gravar o álbum de estreia, "Built to Rock". A produção do longa duração esteve a cargo de Pelle Saether. "Built to Rock" contou ainda com a participação de Ingemar Janson, vocalista dos No Fun At All. O som dos Fonzie chegou depois até aos Estados Unidos, e a assinatura com a Jumpstart Records foi o passo que se seguiu, antes de novo compromisso discográfico, então em Portugal, com a Movieplay. Na mesma altura, a banda ganhou ainda um concurso promovido pelos Millencolin para a melhor versão de um tema da banda sueca.
