Kaya Music Biography

Kaya has become a well-know name on the Liverpool scene both as a singer/songwriter, music practitioner and festival organiser. She works hard, plays hard and bites hard, but isn’t a very hard person at all. Growing up thinking she was weird she prefers peculiar these days, but still isn’t very easy to put in a box. (That’s where the biting comes in) She started chewing her violin bow at 5, and still chews on instruments every time she gets an urge, which isn’t very often anymore. And it’s not the violin at all – the guitar is what she’d pick these days… She sings and writes songs but sounds very different from most female singer/songwriters with a dynamic output that can blow your socks off. She’s had reviews like “an extraordinary vocal talent” and “the perfect balance of warm, charming and light-hearted and serious, powerful and mesmerising” A dynamic performer both solo and with the band Science of the Lamps which started is a home for all the caged songs that didn’t fit Kaya’s band’s alt. rock line up; Lyrical gems with darkness and light, sultry sounds and unfinished rough gems flowing out of notebooks and on the back of beer coasters. The Science of the Lamps was discovered by Kaya in a restaurant in Prague December 2010, she just didn’t know what it was yet.. Since then, the sounds have gradually been shaped in collaboration with GretaCore and a growing collective of fabulous people to create audiovisual expressions of emotions and impression. They are also usually joined on stage by ‘The Usherettes’; harmony treats for your ears and eyes and often inviting other friends on stage as well as in the studio. Their first single, a double header called '27 Club Reject/Mr.Agony' was released on the 10/02/12 on Ultimate Fake/Cavern Records, and the full EP came out 10/10/12. Kaya likes binary numbers; and the EP was recorded by the fabulous Mark Brocklesby formerly of Binary Cell studios – now Seel street. The EP received fantastic critique such as: ‘A unique audio experience that is as picturesque in it's intents as it is bewitching to listen to.’ Online Culture Zine and "an absolute joy to listen to.", Liverpool Sound and Vision Since their first live appearance playing one song at the aptly named Liverpool Light Night in May 2010 they have played quite a few festivals; Standon Calling, Liverpool Sound City, Jessheimdagene (Norway), Above the Beaten Track and Threshold festival, a couple of trips to London, the majority of venues in and around Liverpool including three support slots with Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six, played alongside Shona Foster and pretty much all of the more theatrical and quirky acts in town. They are inspired by poetry, film scores, Norwegian Folk Music, rock, industrial sounds, nature, wine, flamenco, slam poetry, soul, folk, rhytm’n’blues, drum’n’bass, music boxes, metal, goth and whiskey. Or whatever comes out when they come together.. In short, The Science of the Lamps is a dynamic act and prolific songwriters with more than an album’s worth in pre-production to record at the renown Parr Street Studio this Autumn - where they also have a monthly residency in the Studio2 converted bar. Kaya’s previous experience includes singing backing for Ringo Starr at Liverpool08 opening and for Seal and Jon Bon Jovi at the Royal Variety Show with Sense of Sound and a long track record of gigs solo or with band including playing alongside Brett Anderson (Suede), The Wombats, Noah & the Whale, Marina & The Diamonds, Foy Vance, Cherry Ghost, John Smith, Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family, The Farm, Sandi Thom and pretty much the rest of the Liverpool scene and never tires of a good gig experience alone or with the band! Sometimes I'm a balloon in a cactus field.. sometimes I'm a cactus in bubble town.. Singer/songwriter of Science of the Lamps and fingers in many musical pies
