About this concert

Vula Viel Biography

“Dance to it, stare at the clouds to it, make love to it” Iggy Pop

Following the acclaimed release of ‘Do Not Be Afraid’, and a busy year that cemented the unity of the trio and nurtured their artistic growth, Vula Viel return with a new album.
The band continue their sonic explorations around the gyil, the wooden xylophone of the Dagaare from Upper West Ghana, on their brand new set, ‘What’s Not Enough About That’.
Bex Burch (gyil), Ruth Goller (bass) and Jim Hart (drums) continue to forge their own unique fusions. The new tracks stretch out the band’s sound, at times delicate and at others moving into raw post punk soundscapes.

All About Jazz ⭐⭐⭐⭐: “The gyil’s woody warmth finds a life-giving energy in Burch's hands… the swinging bliss of Vula Viel's music comes direct from the source.”
Evening Standard - Album of the week ⭐⭐⭐⭐ "punchy, danceable... Vibe-tastic"
Guardian - "Geometric African minimalism... Goller’s fuzz bass adds a thrilling post-punk edge to proceedings."
Sunday Times - Essential Release: "Unconventional band who can take you by surprise... There's a punk energy to some of the more frenetic performances"
Songlines: "Fearless.. Vula Viel are a live sensation."
The Arts Desk - Vinyl of the month: “the music that pours out is alive with vibrant activity… Vula Viel take the very old and mould it into something bright, new and very, very persuasive.”

Rhythm Passport:  "Vula Viel are a blessing for a music scene like the London one, obsessed with coolness and what being cool implies. They simply play what they like, how they like it. Paraphrasing the title of their album, they’re not afraid, ... dancier and captivating.... a unique music experience."

NTS “An intoxicating blend of punk bass fuzz, polyrhythmic jazz drumming & soul-stirring traditional melodies beaten with joy on the gyil.”
