Sondra Sun-Odeon Biography

Sondra Sun-Odeon is a Los Angeles-based musician and recording artist whose work explores a darkly romantic world full of longing and desire. On her debut album, Ætherea, Sun-Odeon’s guitar loops wrap around clouds of tempestuous string arrangements that morph into fingerpicked arpeggios and heavy drop-tuned chords. Ethereal vocals float above the mix, creating a sound reminiscent of Earth, Robbie Basho, Jason Molina, and the creeping doom of Nico. Sun-Odeon has collaborated with many notable musicians throughout her career, including Helena Espvall (Espers), Leyna Marika Papach (Carla Bouzalich, JG Thirlwell’s Manorexia, Matteah Baim), and Ben McConnell (Beach House, Brightblack Morning Light, Marissa Nadler, Rain Machine). She has also shared bills with Tim Hecker, Wooden Wand, Helena Espvall, Eric Carbonara, Doug Paisley, Little Wings, Mike Wexler, Hit Bargain and Diane Cluck. "Of the artists presently fuzzing the borders between acoustic folk and dreamlike textural abstraction — Grouper, Charalambides and Ben Chasny and Elisa Ambrogio’s 200 Years all come to mind — Sondra Sun-Odeon takes a notably dramatic approach, even if it isn’t initially apparent. Aetherea, the Brooklynite’s self-released solo debut (she also makes up half of “dark-world-psych” outfit Silver Summit) is deceptively front-loaded with restrained, somnolent finger-picked dirges in which her arresting voice — a mesmeric, melancholy thing recalling the laconic drawl of Moon Pix-era Cat Power.... It isn’t until its stormy back half that Aetherea reveals its full agenda, with several of those unassuming ditties swelling into epic torrents of churning, swirling, doom-laden noise-drone. Sneaky!" - Philadelphia City Paper Sondra Sun-Odeon is a Brooklyn-based singer/recording artist; the voice of psychfolk band Silver Summit. Residing in the same spiritual vein, Sun-Odeon’s solo work travels further into the ether of her lyrics’ darkly romantic world, full of heartbreaking longing and desire. On her debut, Ætherea, guitar loops meet clouds of tempestuous string arrangements and morph into fingerpicked arpeggios…ethereal vocals give way to abandon, adjacent heavy drop-tuned guitar chords. The sounds are at times reminiscent of Earth, Charalambides and the voice and mood call to mind 200 Years, early Catpower, Jason Molina, and the lost doom of Nico… Ætherea includes collaborations with Helena Espvall (of Espers) on cello, Leyna Marika Papach (Carla Bouzalich, JG Thirlwell’s Manorexia, Matteah Baim) on violin and viola, and percussion by Ben McConnell (Beach House, Brightblack Morning Light, Marissa Nadler, Rain Machine). She most recently opened for Diane Cluck on a west coast tour and has shared bills with Helena Espvall, Eric Carbonara, Tim Hecker, Doug Paisley, Little Wings, Wooden Wand, Mike Wexler, and others.
