Great show but that goes for almost every show I’ve been to at Kessler. When you are seated 10 feet from the stage with an adult beverage it’s hard to miss. Jesse Sykes is a huge voice contrast to Dave Alvin but it works for what the band is doing. She does all the singing except for Dave’s story telling and the encore of highway 61. So, if you’re counting on Dave’s big bass voice this ain’t it. Basically, a very different set than anything typical with Alvin but it’s a cool concept and a good show. Michael Jerome is incredible on percussion and David Immergluck do some serious guitar riffs.

The Third Mind Biography

“I had a crazy idea and was looking for musicians who perhaps didn’t think it was so insane”. - Dave Alvin

Starting four years ago as a wishful music fantasy, this California based Supergroup, The Third Mind, has now become a powerful and thrilling sonic reality.

The brainchild of Grammy winning songwriter/guitarist Dave Alvin and veteran alternative music bassist Victor Krummenacher, (Camper Van Beethoven, Monks of Doom, Eyelids),The Third Mind's recordings also feature guitarist David Immerglück, (Counting Crows, Monks of Doom, Camper Van Beethoven), drummer Michael Jerome, (Richard Thompson, Better Than Ezra, John Cale) and vocalist Jesse Sykes from her critically acclaimed group, Jesse Sykes And The Sweet Hereeafter.

Featured in festival previews as a must-see from the San Francisco Chronicle to CBS News, The Third Mind made their live debut performance at the 2023 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco’s legendary Golden Gate Park. Adding guest guitarist Mark Karan (Bob Weir's Ratdog, Phil Lesh, Delaney Bramlett) and keyboardist Willie Aaron (Leonard Cohen, Van Dyke Parks), and combining folk-rock, blues, jazz, post-punk, and freeform psychedelia with dark, moody yet hopeful and beautiful sonic landscapes, the “neo-psychedelic” (Press Democrat) band used their decades of experience as bandleaders and side-persons, playing both traditional and non-traditional music to mesmerize a crowd estimated at 4,000.

American Songwriter album review: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars

"It’s a captivating, often enthralling voyage as these trippy, somewhat hallucinogenic songs get pulled like taffy; stretching, lengthening, and allowing this assemblage the leeway to explore instrumental nuances that shape-shift them into new, perhaps better, surely more experimental versions of themselves”– American Songwriter

"The Third Mind has landed on a formula that works without formularizing. Like the best music, one can get lost in their sonic world." –Glide Magazine

“...what unfolds on this sophomore release is magic, thanks to the Third Mind’s large doses of talent and imagination.” –Blogcritics

"….the stunning guitar playing sends a shiver down your back." - Rocking Magpie
