About this concert
Grammy™ nominee Tracy Bonham is no stranger to success––over the past three years alone, she’s had her most recent album make Rolling Stone’s Top 50 albums of the year, and she’s headlined four national tours of the United States. A fifth, of the West Coast, begins March 6th 2020. The current wave of commercial and critical success she’s enjoying is remarkable and rare for any artist. But for Tracy Bonham, it’s no surprise: she’s an artist who has never ceased growing and has never stopped challenging herself, her own talents, or her audience. Bonham’s debut, The Burdens of Being Upright, achieved Gold Record status in 1996, spawning the chart-topping hit “Mother Mother.” A pair of Grammy™ nominations followed, along with an MTV Video Award nomination for the single, which has remained a powerful anthem for the disenfranchised and isolated.  After following The Burdens of Being Upright with the critically-acclaimed album Down Here––heralded by All Music Guide as “a smart, assured, and distinctive second effort that is a quantum leap past her debut”––Bonham moved to Los Angeles to become the featured vocalist and violinist for Blue Man Group. 2005’s Blink The Brightest cemented her as the commercial and artful songwriter her fans had already come to love, with multiple TV and film placements and her third extensive tour in as many records. Subsequent to her move back to Brooklyn, her 2010 album Masts of Manhatta garnered rave reviews and landed her her second appearance on The Tonight Show. “Unfalteringly charming lyricism,” was Billboard’s praise for the record, while Rolling Stone called the album, “a gorgeous celebration of adult love.” The laurels won by her recent releases––both 2015’s Wax & Gold, and her latest, Modern Burdens, described by Rolling Stone as “a lovingly penned postcard to Bonham's past self, and a fascinating look at where she's at right now”––have further underlined exactly what makes Tracy Bonham a stand-out serious artist with a unique set of talents. As PopMatters aptly states, “Bonham, from the beginning and increasingly over time, is a riveting, complicated maker of pop music.” Tracy Bonham has joined the ECR Music Group roster of recording artists and is currently working on a new record slated for release in early 2021. Her artist-in-residence concert series at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City continues this spring and runs through May 7th. She lives in Brooklyn.

What fans are saying

April 16th 2024
Great show. The feeling was being in Tracy's basement as the venue held about 200 people. I am a big fan of the Tracy Bonham of the the 90's with hard driving guitar, drums, base and of course Tracy on the violin. This was a more "mellow" Tracy but I respect that she has to enjoy the music she is playing and she certainly gave the impression that she loves playing in front of us. It's a three piece band with Tracy playing keyboards and electric guitar, a stand up base and a drummer. I would not hesitate to see her again.

Tracy Bonham Biography

Tracy Bonham is a classically trained violinist and pianist turned alternative singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 1996 with her twice GRAMMY™ nominated album, The Burdens of Being Upright (Island Records). This debut album cast Bonham into the global spotlight with MTV fame and major radio airplay with her #1 alternative chart-topping song Mother Mother, an anthem for disgruntled teenagers of all ages. Over the past 27 years, her albums and live performances have shown what it is to be an ever-evolving artist.

On stage Bonham is joined by upright bassist Rene Hart (David Amram, James Hunter, Banford Marsalis, Dakota Staton) and drummer Alvester Garnett (Regina Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter) and with her new material (scheduled to be released in 2024) she connects to something deeper than ever, her true self. Most of the new songs are performed on the piano giving her the chance to lean back to what made her fall in love with music in the first place. Borrowing harmonic structures and beautiful melodies from her favorite classical romantic composers, Bonham stretches herself artistically to combine this rediscovered passion with her unique and quirky songwriting style to create musical alchemy. This purifying process most certainly acts as a vehicle for inner transformation for Bonham. "It's like going back to the spark I had as a very young musician, discovering the beauty of Ravel and DeBussy and reclaiming that spark and everything that has happened after that". Bonham speaks of her current line-up,  "Playing with incredible jazz musicians like Rene and Alvester has opened my mind and is now giving me the support I have always needed to spread my wings and fly. I am really enjoying exploring the intersections and overlaps of where classical and jazz meet without excluding my alternative rock sensibilities. These dudes can rock too. The three of us playing together is definitely my happy place".
