The Naked Tungs Biography

The Naked Tungs are an indie garage rock band from Austin, Texas. The four-piece includes Sarah Ronan (vocals/rhythm guitar), Hersh Cohen (vocals/lead guitar), Cooley Curzel (bass), and Riley Corcoran (drums). Although the band officially formed in Austin, the group also has roots in Florida.

In 2013, three of the members (Ronan, Cohen and Curzel) met in Tallahassee, where they attended college. The trio gravitated towards one another out of a mutual respect for artists such as The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Parquet Courts, and Black Lips. What started out as a few friends playing cover songs together quickly evolved into an artistic collaboration. After performing at various venues in Tallahassee for two years, they moved to Austin, Texas.

Not long after they relocated, Ronan, Cohen and Curzel started to write and record songs using a home recorder and a drum machine. After six months of living in Austin, a mutual friend introduced them to Riley Corcoran, who moved to Austin from Orlando, Florida. With a list of influences including Death Grips, The Flaming Lips, and Arctic Monkeys, Corcoran brought a dynamic percussive energy that blended seamlessly with the garage rock grit and experimental tendencies of the original trio. The Naked Tungs officially formed in February 2017. Two months after their formation, the band self-recorded and produced their debut EP, Hear It Calls, which was released in May 2017.

After the release of Hear It Calls, the group wasted no time in getting material together for a new release. As they continued to perform around Austin, the band began recording another EP in January 2018 with Dave Hanson, a friend of Corcoran’s. Crossing, a single from these sessions, was released in July 2018. Their second EP, Distract Myself, was released on August 24th, 2018.
