The Softone

ITA - Il progetto The Softone nasce a metà degli anni Zero da una manciata di canzoni scritte in solitaria da Giovanni Vicinanza, una demo di canzoni fortemente ispirate che consentiranno al giovane cantautore di avere dei primi contatti artistici con il mondo delle produzioni musicali. Infatti, a breve, nello stesso anno, una sua cover di "Easy Lover" degli Spain viene inserita nella compilation "Keepsake vol.2", dell'etichetta U.S.A Keepsake Recordings, ancora oggi citata nella discografia ufficiale della stessa band.
L'anno successivo vince il "Today I'm Rock", grazie al quale suona al MEI di Faenza e compare la canzone "Song for another place" nell'omonima raccolta licenziata da AwfulBliss/Urtovox, in compagnia di artisti del calibro di Barzin e Great Lake Swimmers.
In quell'occasione esce per l'etichetta Awful Bliss il disco d'esordio "These Days Are Blue" (2008). L'album, registrato da Vicinanza al suo Lavalab Studio, viene missato da Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western) Al Type Foundry di Portland (U.S.A) ed ottiene ottimi riscontri di critica e pubblico, portando The Softone ad esibirsi in Italia e Francia. Al di là delle Alpi la sua musica non passa inosservata ed infatti viene invitato a partecipare al "Tribute to John Williams" (2010, Winter Records) e alla compilation "Have a good night#4" di BlogUpMusique.

A giugno 2010 The Softone appaiono su DEMO L'ACCHIAPPATALENTI (Radio 1 RAI ), noto programma nazionale di musica indipendente di Micheal Pergolani e Renato Marengo, con ben 3 canzoni ( in questi 9 anni di artisti che si sono visti passare 3 brani alla prima messa in onda se ne contano una dozzina o giù di lì): All My Days, From the Backyard e For Tonight. I. Ad ottobre 2010 The Softone vengono ospitati a Saxa Rubra, per la stessa trasmissione, per una puntata speciale dedicata al loro progetto musicale. Sono tra gli 8 finalisti del Demo Awards 2010/2011, per il quale si classificano al 2° posto: la premiazione avviene nella sala 3 degli studi Rai di via Asiago, dove Vicinanza si esibisce con il brano "All my days" in compagnia del fratello controtenore Enrico Vicinanza. Nella stessa serata, in onda su Radio 1 Rai, si esibiscono artisti del calibro di Simone Cristicchi e Peppe Servillo. Nell'Estate del 2011, si esibiscono per la Rai, all'Alburni Jazz Festival di Sesse (Sa) come band di supporto del duo "Magoni&Spinetti" e al "Demofest" di Catanzaro con artisti del calibro di Giuliano Palma e i Bluebeaters e Roy Paci.

Il 26 Marzo 2012, The Softone pubblica per la label Cabezon Records il suo secondo atteso full-lenght "Horizon Tales". Registrato e mixato al Lavalab Recording Studio da Vicinanza con la supervisione artistica di Cesare Basile, il disco si snoda attraverso le highways musicali a stelle e strisce costruite negli ultimi cinquanta anni: il blues, il folk, la roots music, il rock e il country. Dopo un tour in giro per l'Italia e la Francia, a distanza di un anno da "Horizon Tales" , The Softone torna con "Tears of Lava", un EP ispirato che dimostra la vitalità del loro progetto musicale. Le registrazioni e il mixaggio avvengono ancora al Lavalab Recording Studio dello stesso Vicinanza, mentre il mastering viene effettuato da Gengy Di Guglielmo nell' Elettroformati Studio di Milano.

BIO/ENG - The Softone is the main project of the Italian songwriter Giovanni Vicinanza. After some years spent through various musical experiences, he chooses the most intimate way founding The Softone ("Soft" stands for the delicacy of the sound, and "one" stands for his solitary mood). He starts to write lots of songs in his recording studio. In 2004 he appears in the "Keepsake compilation vol.2" (Keeprecordings) with a graceful cover of Spain's "Easy Lover" also included in his first self-produced promotional album. This cover is mentioned in Spain's official discography. The year 2006 is the time for being part of Awful_Bliss' double CD compilation "Songs for another place" along with the likes of Tracker, Tobin Sproud, Swearingat Motorists, Great Lake Swimmers. In 2008, The Softone debut album "These days are blue" is out!!! Dreamy folk music for the 21st century. Amazing sound cared by the mixer of Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western). This album is very appreciated in France, where The Softone is part of a "Tribute to John Williams" (2010, Winter Records) and BlogUpMusique's CD Compilation "Have a good night#4".
In 2010, The national italian radio station, RADIO 1 RAI, sends All My Days, From The Backyard and For tonight, during the indie music show "Demo L'Acchiappatalenti". During 2011 Summer, The Softone performs on great music Festival like "Alburni Jazz Festival" and " Catanzaro Demofest".
On March 26 2012, The Softone release his second full-length album "Horizon Tales", a mix of country and jazz, rockabilly and Mississippi blues. In this album, The Softone jumps from the mariachi influence of flamenco guitars a là Dan Sartain (“Matamoros”) to a more lounge-ish atmosphere, created thanks to the female vocals in what could be described as a mix of Mark Lanegan and Isobell Campbell-esque blues/folk and the twee pop of Belle and Sebastian (“Alien Lanes”, “Get Together”). Reverb and surf guitars are the secret ingredients of the ballads a là Elvis, (“Never Forget”), after which the listener is thrown into the melancholy of Mississippi blues (“All that Noise”). However, blues is not just about nostalgia as “True Blues” and “Slide Down” prove: the influence of some other Italian blues rock acts (such as Vernon Selavy, Sadside Project and Movie Star Junkies) is mixed with the Tarantino-esque bass guitar of rockabilly. The sixties are evoked in the jazz-driven “On your Trial”, where nu-jazz mixes with some Beatles in the vein of compatriots My Foolish Heart. “Horizon Tales” naturally jumps from the most distorted Dylan to the almost-burlesque folk of Karen Elson, almost without any faux pas (with the exception of “Never Forget”) . It’s the music of the roots reworked into a modern sound, and this may be the lead element of such a multi-coloured album. After only 1 year, a new album "Tears of Lava" is out! Recording and mixing are cared by Giovanni Vicinanza in his Lavalab Recording Studio, while mastering is cared by Gengy Di Guglielmo in Elettroformati Studio.
