About this concert
Ukulele Picnic at Blue Note Featuring Sekiguchi Band, Iron Mango & Taimane This February, we celebrate the 12th anniversary of Ukulele Picnic in Hawaii, where thousands of ukulele lovers from around the world gather for a day of music at Victoria Ward Park. We’re continuing the festivities with a night at the Blue Note! Join us for an evening featuring ukulele virtuoso Taimane, Iron Mango and Sekiguchi Band. Taimane: Catch Hawaii’s 2019 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Favorite Entertainer of the Year, Taimane, at the intimate and wonderful Blue Note Hawaii stage. After over a decade of passionately pursuing her art, Taimane has established herself as a Hawaii cultural leader sharing her music and vision of her homeland with the world. Iron Mango: Formed as a Hawaiian Supergroup, this band is a who's who of Hawaiian music. All Hoku award winners, the band consists of four musicians, including “Pure Heart” members Jon Yamasato and Lopaka Colon, Richard Gideon of the award-winning group “Maunalua” and ukulele superstar Kalei Gamiao. Sekiguchi Band with Special Guest Hook: Sekiguchi Band is a whistle and ukulele unit led by Kazuyuki Sekiguchi, producer of Ukulele Picnic in Hawaii and member of famous Japanese rock band Southern All Stars. Kazuyuki loves the ukulele and has been promoting the instrument all around the world since publishing “The Ukulele Book” in 1992. He has collaborated with Hawaii artists such as Herb Ota and Roy Sakuma, releasing many CDs and organizing several ukulele events. Band Members: Whistle player Kimiko Wakiyama is a female champion of the 2007 World Whistle Tournament, with a 3-octave range. Yanagiman plays the bass, but he is also an expert producer who made many Japanese bands famous. Yu Hatakeyama is Japan’s leading Cajon player. She has played with many famous musicians and released a Cajon instruction DVD and instruction book. Special guest ukulele artist Hook will join the group, combining elements of jazz, blues, country, funk and flamenco in his playing. Taimane Biography

Taimane translates to diamond from Samoan and perfectly reflects the different facets of her nature. Whether delicately finger-picking through Bach or radically ripping through Led Zeppelin, Taimane has the ability to morph genres – from classical to rock to flamenco – and stretch her instrument far beyond the familiar melodies of Hawai`i, where she grew up. In addition to performing her own distinctive versions of well-known pieces, Taimane weaves in original compositions that are as far ranging as her musical tastes. With the fierceness of a rocker, and the grace of a dancer, Taimane and her music are wowing ever-larger audiences. She lights up rooms wherever she goes, sparkling like the diamond that she is.
