“Sometimes all you have is the music” says JaQuita, “growing up in a small town can, be hard, and singing and dancing is what always the constant and reliable friend.” JaQuita always had aspirations of becoming an entertainer, but she always knew that she had to move on from where she was. Relocating to New Jersey while in her teens was not at all difficult for her. “I came here yearly to visit my family here, and one summer came, and I just stayed, it was the best decision of my life”
The transition to a more culturalized area wasn’t the problem, overcoming her shyness and insecurities about her singing was another issue. JaQuita grew up on gospel and was raised to perform in recitals at church and singing in the choir, but she always hid her true vocal talent behind closed doors. “I would sing all alone, and not let anyone hear me. I would sing Whitney Houston ballads most of the time, but no one really knew I sang, as a dancer I was more known for that” says JaQuita. It took her having to sing in front of her class in high school for her to experience the ability to move people with her voice. “I sang “If it’s Over” from Mariah Carey with my eyes closed!” says JaQuita. “But when I finished, and opened my eyes, my classmates were just starring, and then everyone started clapping. Then I knew..This is what I am meant to do..this is it for me”
From then on, JaQuita has performed for numerous school events, sang at her teachers wedding and continued to craft her talent. She was audition for broadway shows of which she had numerous callbacks, just to become more comfortable inside her skin as a singer. “People tell you that you’re talented, but until you believe inside yourself, that’s when things can really take form” says JaQuita. “It took a long time and disappointments for me to get to the point where I felt comfortable with my voice, but it was always there”
JaQuita influences are across the board, she is known vocally for her versatility and her dancing ability. She has recorded with hip/hops acts, written and released numerous dance records, working with the likes of Roger Sanchez, Kings of Tomorrow, and Jellybean Benitez. In 2005, she was one of eight finalists on Oprah’s Pop star Challenge picked from 15,000 entries. “It was amazing part of my life that I will never forget, it only motivated to continue doing with I love” says JaQuita. In 2007, she toured with Roger Sanchez overseas and his S-Man Band. “When I get on a stage, that where I feel so at home, it’s such a release” says JaQuita.
JaQuita is determined to always continue on achieving and taking her love for music to different levels. She continues to write and perform and now is working on releasing her album. “I have many people in my life, I am grateful for, and learn from them. We all want to achieve greatness, and that’s what I am striving for” says JaQuita. I have realized that its best to be silent and just show up and do the work, it pays off …… I like to challenge myself “ says JaQuita laughing “Then I surprise people with what I can do”
