About this concert
CURE FOR PAIN is not a “cover band” show. It is bands being themselves whilst paying tribute to other bands, with renditions ranging from faithful to libertine. Morphine was an American rock band formed by Mark Sandman, Dana Colley, and Jerome Deupree in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1989. The band coined the label “low rock” to describe their music. After five studio albums and extensive touring, Morphine disbanded after lead vocalist Sandman had a heart attack onstage in Palestrina, Italy on July 3, 1999. The Fruit Stare is a Chicago-based, multimedia art group founded by songwriter Christopher Salveter and composer Jefferey Thomas. The duo brought together a large ensemble of musicians, singers, actors, poets, nurses, and neighbors to create their first sonic work, Summer Marches In. Completed as artists-in-residence at Experimental Sound Studio in 2015, the work has since become the first episode of The Fruit Stare Podcast-Opera, released in 2019. The Fruit Stare, named after a foraging habit of orangutans, uses performance, video, and song to create a surreal story world. Season one of the podcast-opera and its accompanying live show, Dr. Atop’s Journey to the Polygon of Suffering, explore reparations, cult mind control, the American music industry, and climate change. The Cure are an English rock band formed in Crawley in 1976. The band’s lineup has changed several times, with guitarist, lead singer and songwriter Robert Smith the only constant member. They’ve released 13 studio albums and have toured internationally as recently as 2019. Roommate are an ever-evolving Chicago-based art-pop band. They’ve released four albums and two EPs and performed sporadically since 2001, in lineups ranging from one to 10 people, with lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kent Lambert the only constant member. In October 2012 Roommate performed two sets of songs by The Cure for The Whistler’s “Playing Favorites” series, after releasing their cover of “A Night Like This.” They reprised their Cure show at The Burlington in February 2013 and November 2014.
