Mallory Biography
At times ambient. At times rock. At times a confusing din. Two guitars…a drum kit…an occasional hand for a synthesizer. Someone sings (sometimes two). mallory cultivates a sound that breathes structure, but secretly lives in free-form - an ever changing collage living inside the music created by their environment. The three creep between distorted happiness and subversive darkness - displaying a spectrum of feel and sound that has brought a range of categorizations and comparisons (post-punk, indie rock, college, ambient: Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, Pink Floyd (early)).
the first one hundred years, the band’s first full length, was recorded live at Ultra Suede Studio and engineered by former Afghan Whig John Curley. The album records the honest, fluid interactions that instill an atmospheric cohesion between enveloping guitar work, raw drumming, and sparse melodic synthesizer.
Their brand of sound and dynamic live experience has led to performances with Interpol, T.V. on the Radio, Clinic, Calla, Mates of State, The Heartless Bastards... among others. mallory's first album won "Album of the Year" during the 2003 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards, along with a “New Artist of the Year” nomination.

“Mallory's debut, The First One Hundred Years, a kaleidoscopic assortment of ambient sounds, churning Post-Punk rhythms, wild-eyed guitar interplay, and winding, engaging arrangements and compositions. The First One Hundred Years is a mesmerizing piece of work.”
- Mike Breen, CityBeat, November 2002.
“This is quite honestly an amazing band. ...[mallory] form such a unique sound, it’s hard to categorize them into a specific genre, but they’ve got some post-punk sensibilities that really shine through. I have never been to a show where most of the people there watched the entire opening local act.”
- Brainlove, British web zine review of live show with Interpol, January 2003.
“The disc shows deep musical maturity. Alternating between chilling, exhilarating and aggressive, FOHY provides ultimately listenable 'songscapes' The disc's seven tracks sequence effortlessly into one another, retaining their unique individuality but encouraging the listener to remain until the disc is done.”
- Sean Rhiney, cincymusic.com, November 2002.
