Javier Subatin Biography

Javier Subatin was born in Buenos Aires in 1985 and he is now living in Lisbon.

Currently, he has three projects where he explores different group setups. His first recording, Autotelic, is based on a duo of piano and guitar with the renown Portuguese jazz pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva. Which was released on May 2018 with the support of Sintoma Records and Antena2.

His second album, Variaciones, is now on the work and is made of a series of compositions for jazz quintet. For this group, he has the collaboration of some of the most relevant jazz musicians from Portugal: Pedro Moreira (sax), João Paulo Esteves da Siva (piano), André Rosinha (double bass) and Diogo Alexandre (drums).

He is also working on a series of compositions for trio (sax, guitar and drums) called Trance with young emerging jazz musicians from Portugal: Daniel Sousa (sax) and Diogo Alexandre (drums).

In 2019, he's been a finalist, with Trance Trio project, at the Euroradio Jazz Competition at the Copenhaguen Jazz Festival in Denmark.

In 2018, he won a grant from Fundação GDA for the production of his second album “Variaciones”, which is going to be released in 2019.

In 2017, he participated as a finalist in the Komeda Jazz Festival composers’ competition in Poland.

In 2015, he participated in the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland) being selected to participate in the guitar competition.

In 2002 at 17 years of age he was a finalist in the Oscar Alemán International Jazz Guitar Competition (Concurso Internacional de Guitarra Jazz Oscar Alemán).

He is finishing the second year of the master's degree in jazz performance at the Superior School of Music in Lisbon (Instituto Superior de Música de Lisboa) and in 2017 he won a scholarship in research with the Wind Band Department directed by Alberto Roque. Currently, he is also working on research about contemporary jazz. He wrote an article about Contemporary Jazz Composition for which he interviewed 11 of the most renowned contemporary jazz composers from Europe, Latin-América and United States, including Carla Bley, David Liebman, Dan Tepfer, Ed Neumeister, Julian Arguelles, Reinier Baas, Roberto Bonati and Jon Balke. This research project has been selected to be presented at the Nova Contemporary Music Meeting conference in Lisbon.

Javier is also starting his path in classical composition and his piece “Pensando Vientos” (for flute, clarinet, horn and string quartet) has been selected to be part of a workshop at the Annual Royal Music Association conference in Bristol.

Additionally, he is conducting a research study about jazz compositional process with the collaboration of the renown composer Ed Neumeister.

Currently, Javier is a professor at the Escola de Jazz da Fábrica do Braço de Prata where he teaches jazz guitar and jazz project production.

"A melodic narrative where the music flows like a kite in the air, carried by its own will, and yet in the safe hands of the musicians who give the music the greatest trust: to let go and play without a reel."

All About Jazz

"It’s a lot like parallel play with delightful intersections of unity before each musician resumes and goes off anew over the knolls."
