The Jazz Russell Biography
The musicians of The Jazz Russell band have been – and still are – key members of renowned rhythmic sections within the Italian swing and mainstream jazz scene. Considered reliable sidemen by acclaimed soloists and frequently associated with specific leaders’ projects, they eventually decided to gather and form their own combo, with the intention of bringing the unrestricted approach of language and forms of contemporary jazz to the repertoire of traditional jazz. Inspired by the desire of speaking a unified musical voice, building on each other’s contribution without a specific soloist, The Jazz Russell band aim at a dialogue between instruments, which is considered as being the true soloist. The Jazz Russell's arrangements are written on the job and on the go, completely opening up to the audience, embracing risks and approaching listeners with spontaneity and sincerity, as well as a distinctive sound. Ranging from Horace Silver’s standards to the Italian swing songs of the '30s, and from traditional songs of New Orleans to Latin melodies, the repertoire of The Jazz Russell band is deliberately heterogeneous, without philological ambitions or desire for coherence, and is kept together by the distinctive sound and approach of the band: always playful and in constant pursuit of surprises, just like crazy Jack Russells... in short: The Jazz Russell. During live perfomances, songs, melodies and structures are bent to new forms suggested by the moment: while still loving the tradition, The Jazz Russell look for a space of freedom often not sought in the practices of classic jazz. The Trios and Quartet are composed of Filippo A. Delogu (guitar, direction), Andrea Nuzzo (Hammond, Rhodes), Light Palone and Fabrizio Montemarano (doublebass), Alfredo Romeo (drums).
