Founded in October 2007, the Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society is an informal gathering of folk of all ages, skill levels and callings, united by a love of the ukulele.AUAS meets at The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel on most Wednesdays.First Wednesday – Richard T leads our Introductory Session for beginners and first-time ukers. You’ll get the hang of strumming, learning by ear and some basic chords: enough to feel comfortable and confident to play away on your own, and probably join the AUAS congregation on another Tuesday. Meet in the Front Bar, tuned and ready for a 730pm start. Finishes about 9ish.First and Third Wednesdays are also Drop-In Night – turn up with a uke and song or piece you’d like to play and see who else is there to join in. Nothing formal: no mikes, no leaders, just a chance to meet other ukers, noodle along a little, get in some group practice. 7.30pm-9.30pm or whenever…Second and Fourth Wednesdays are Workshop Nights. Everyone is welcome, and in the first hour we practice songs in our repertoire, maybe learn something new, maybe have a guest artist. In the second hour, smaller groups learn something new (there’s always a group for beginners) or practice something up, and we then perform for each other. We aim for 7pm for tuning and settling, 7.30pm start, and finish between 9pm and 9.30pm.Though there’s always a core of players who will perform til the pub closes.Third Wednesdays – Richard T leads a session on Strumming + Picking – excellent for players who’ve mastered strumming and want to extend their skills. Meet in the Front Bar, tuned and ready for a 7.30pm start. Finishes about 9ish. It’s also Drop-In Night.Fifth Wednesday (when there is one) – that’s when we stay home and scour the web for uke-related items, polish our ukes, and talk to our families.Limelight – every now and then, we drop the workshop and spend a night performing and singing. These nights (complete with bright costumes and party pies) will be posted when they are confirmed!AUAS plays gigs from time to time…we’ve never been known to decline an invitation! Gold coin entry in the front bar.
