About this concert
The World Chess Hall of Fame is thrilled to present singer Brian Owens in concert with the Adam Maness Trio in a program of soulful holiday classics sure to get you in the spirit of the season. Owens, a vibrantly vintage artist who follows the groove gospel of classic 1960s and 1970s soul with a heavy dose of traditional quartet stylings, will take the listener on a journey through sacred and secular favorites alongside frequent collaborators Adam Maness, Bob DeBoo, Montez Coleman and student performers from the LIFE Arts Flow Artist Collective. Brian Owens’ vocals are a revelation—purposeful and passionate—recalling the sensual urgency of Marvin Gaye, the comforting falsetto of Curtis Mayfield, and tender grit of Sam Cooke. He has performed at the White House and the World Series, Powell Hall and the Apollo Theater. Owens is the Founder, CEO and Executive Director of LIFE Arts Inc. in Ferguson, MO. The Adam Maness Trio formed in early 2017 around a mutual love of melody, and joyful improvisation. Featuring Adam Maness on piano, Bob DeBoo on bass, and Montez Coleman on drums, the trio is continually adding new compositions and arranging popular songs in the tradition of the modern piano trio. General admission is $20. Discounted admission is *$10 and available for members, seniors, and military. For additional information, please call 314-367-9243. Admission includes one free drink and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Metered on-street parking is available, as well as paid lots adjacent to Kingside Diner and at the Schlafly Branch of the St. Louis Public Library.

Awesome, AWESOME show!! Mr. Owens did Marvin proud in every way tonight. In addition to bringing pure, heart-and-soul Marvin Gaye to the playlist, he and his outstanding musicians put a fantastic contemporary feel to Marvin’s work that was so rich and happy, it made me cry. Huge, sincere thanks to Brian Owens and the band for bringing some lovin’ here today and to my husband for always finding the way. And thanks to the Sumter Opera House - so enjoyable in this lovely venue.

Brian Owens Soul Biography

“‘Brian Owens is one of the newly emerging talents whose artistry will no doubt capture the imagination of an ever wider audience as time goes on. I feel extremely privileged to have crossed paths with him so early in what I believe will be a very successful musical career.” - Michael McDonald

Brian Owens is vibrantly vintage—aesthetically he follows the groove gospel of classic 1960s and 1970s soul with heavy dose of traditional quartet stylings, but it has a very “in the now” emotionality. Brian and his core trio, The Deacons of Soul (Shaun Robinson, Alvin Quinn and Rob Woodie) offer an experience that invites audiences to partake to honor the past and attend to the present and future through performances that are about “preservation. Brian is making music with intent, art that inspires positive change. His vocals are a revelation—purposeful and passionate—he remains his own stylist while recalling the sensual urgency of Marvin Gaye, the comforting falsetto of Curtis Mayfield, and tender grit of Sam Cook.
