A regular at the Bar Next Door, The Nora McCarthy Trio is a group of rooted musicians who masterfully play with an earthy vibrancy and well seasoned approach. They perform an artful array of standards, post modern contemporary jazz music, blues and original compositions that are spontaneously intermingled with flights of improvisation and poetry. A compelling sound fashioned in a modern mode that is immersed in tradition, imbued with rhythm and infused with spirit. Nora McCarthy is an organic Jazz vocalist and innovative improviser, equally adept at singing contemporary jazz, classic jazz, Blues and the free music art forms, she is daringly original, versatile and a fearlessly honest singer/songwriter and poet who is an important force in the advanced New York jazz vocal scene. Marvin Sewell was born and raised in Chicago where he learned a variety of styles of music such as: Blues, Gospel, and Soul. Rock, Fusion and Jazz. He played with many famous Chicago musicians including Von Freeman and Ramsey Lewis. He moved to New York in 1990 and in 1992 began working with Jack Dejohnette's Special Edition. At that same time, he was playing with Jazz cellist Diedre Murray and Jazz Bassist Fred Hopkins. The following year he recorded albums with Jack Dejohnette, Diedre Murray, and Gary Thomas. In his long illustrious career Marvin has performed and recorded with David Sandborn, Marcus Miller, Jorge Sylvester, Greg Osby, Joe Lovano, George Benson, Sekou Sanidiata, Peter Herborn, and Cassandra Wilson who he was with for over six years. Marvin co wrote the song, "Right Here, Right Now" with Cassandra. Before leaving Cassandra Wilson, he was the music director of her band for a little over a year. Gene Torres Electric Bassist Electric Bassist, Gene Torres, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Playing bass, one note at a time!! Jazz, Rock, Funk, Brazilian, Soul, Salsa, R&B. Picked up the bass at 15 years old and has not put it down since. Started out playing R&B (Motown, Stax, Atlantic, etc.) then moved on to funk (James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Earth, Wind and Fire, etc). Gene has had the pleasure of playing and or recording with runs the gamut of music styles, for example Ben E. King, Al Hibbler, Rahn Burton, Public Enemy, Yousef Lateef, Chico O’Farrel’s Afro--‐Cuban Big band at Birdland. Ernie Marcelin of Taboo Combo, La Bamba and the Hubcaps, Southside Johnny, Ted Curson – Blue Note --‐ Late Nite Jam Session, The Weather Girls, The Chiffons at The Apollo Theatre, Chambers Brothers, Jonathan Butler, Hannes DeKassian Trio, Moon Pool, Tony Cedras (Keyboardist with Paul Simon), Jennifer Holiday, Noo Voodoo, Mark Pender (of the Conan O’Brian show, opening up for the BT Express). The Big Apple Circus, David Dorfman Dance Company, Fred Ho (Vampire Opera) Petey Pablo of Jive Records, Gucci Man (Me & You single), Danny Mixon, Ty Stephens, Pee Wee Ellis , Co--‐winner of the 2010 McDonalds GospelFest Childrens Choir Contest…to name a few (list not updated.)

Nora McCarthy Biography

Nora McCarthy has thus far had a very productive and significant musical career. A unique and original singer, poet, songwriter and innovative improviser, she is an important force in the advanced New York jazz scene since 1996 when she recorded her first of thus far eight CD’s, red&blue with John diMartino, Essiet Okon Essiet, Alvester Garnett, Mike Lee and Sato Takeishi.

McCarthy’s musical roots run deep. Her burnished alto voice is rich with a distinctive style that cuts a broad swath from soul, rhythm & blues, jazz, bebop, post-bop, modal jazz and the free, avant-garde idioms but her sound is reminiscent of the great voices and horns in jazz.

Nora currently leads the following creative ensembles: The People of Peace Quintet; The Nora McCarthy Organic Trio; Nora McCarthy Qu’ART’et; A Small Dream In Red Innovative Voice and Saxophone Duo with Jorge Sylvester, Nora McCarthy Manna For Thought Improvising Trio; and, The Modern Voice Ensemble. McCarthy is co-founder with alto saxophonist Jorge Sylvester of ConceptualMotion Orchestra, 20-piece large ensemble.
Nora is a member of Jorge Sylvester ACE (Afro-Caribbean-Experimental) Collective and the Extended Edition with Strings; The Blue Unity; and, David Haney and Bernard Purdie’s Sextet, “Jazz Stories.”
Nora worked closely with the late Conductor, Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris’ as a member of the Chorus of Poets from 2005-2010.

• Nora currently presents a jazz radio show for Cadence Jazz World (http://www.cadencejazzworld.com) called, “Nora’s Jazz Show” featuring jazz and avant-jazz, world jazz by established and emerging artists from around the world.

• Nora (MIC~ART Productions) produced Take It OUT!! Tuesday, a creative music series presenting the finest established and emerging artists, instrumentalists, vocal artists, visual and movement artists, and poets at the legendary Medicine Show Theatre on 52nd Street in NYC.

• Nora has developed a comprehensive 13-pronged approach to teaching voice, improvisation and career development and is the founder of The Zen Of Singing...The Spiritual Path To Finding Your Voice ™ and currently teaches privately, conducts workshops, and master classes.

• McCarthy has penned lyrics to dozens of jazz standards and countless other compositions by other artists including her own original music.

• McCarthy's has been writing prose, poetry and word art for several decades.

• McCarthy' has written over 30 compositions and graphic compositions, soundscapes and poetic architectures that she has been designing since 2001 for her advanced music groups.
