Native to the rolling hills of Wisconsin, when she was 9 years old, her family moved to the little, rootsy mountain town of Nevada City, California. This was where her first lyrics came to life, inspired by the thriving artists surrounding her. “My Papa listened to Reggae, and mama listened to early morning Kirtan and a blend of the classic female vocalists of earlier revolutions. I grew up at festivals and Rainbow gatherings, listening to The Grateful Dead and festival gypsy jams. Those types of sounds have always been prominent in my music, but I could never deny my love for some 80s/90s pop.” “My writing style is fluid, it just pours out, which sometimes can be uncomfortable because its fairly unfiltered. On the other hand its honest, and I think thats what I want to convey most, the truth.” At 17, Kalyja shared her vision, and like a breath of fresh air, a deeper truth, with the release of her first album, 200 MOONS, in the spring of 2014. In each song, she balances external views of the world with internal reflections, bringing us a soulful reminder of the way life shapes us.
