"Mississippi Masala Blues" is the rare pairing of two world-class blues artists - Aki Kumar and Alabama Mike - Bay Area-based Blues pioneers who are constantly pushing the genre in new and unique directions. Sony Recording artist Aki Kumar has made big waves worldwide with his "Bollywood Blues" sound - a genre-bending experiment that blends retro Indian music with the blues. Alabama Mike, "the future of the blues,” is a hard-driving Chicago-style blues singer who upsets the status quo of the genre with his vibrant new approach to the music, making it refreshingly relevant to life in the the 21st century. This not-to-be missed event also features Kumar's stellar Bollywood Blues band, comprising of the SF Bay Area's finest: Paul Revelli (drums), Vance Ehlers (bass) and Rome Yamilov (guitar).
Tickets are $20 in advance and $22 at the door. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available at the link below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby). The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. Aki Kumar Biography
Dynamic frontman & harp player Aki Kumar is a rising star among the next generation of SF Bay Area blues artists. A master of the amplified Chicago blues sound, Kumar inherits his style from the harp legends of the 1950s and 60s. Aki has a unique voice in the blues, blending elements of blues harmonica pioneers of yesteryear with a signature sound of his own.
Born and raised in Bombay - India, Kumar established his mark on the West Coast blues scene starting in 2009 as frontman of the SF Bay Area's highly acclaimed blues outfit Tip of the Top. His latest venture, The Aki Kumar Blues Band, involves several Bay Area blues luminaries and has been the culmination of his journey through American roots music. The band performs vintage blues with tremendous skill and energy and is guaranteed to entertain audiences across all venues, from intimate listening rooms to large festivals. When not performing under his own name, Aki Kumar can also be found working with the heavy-hittin' blues band, Little Jonny and The Giants.
