Sirgun Kaur Biography

Sirgun is an Arizona-based Sacred Songstress and Spiritual Coach. She was raised moving back and forth between Los Angeles and Southern France, and spent her adult life attending Brown University in Rhode Island, living in Connecticut and is currently based in Arizona. In the midst of constant change, one element has remained consistent in Sirgun’s life: Music.

From collecting nursery rhymes as an infant, sharing her adolescent woes with a sympathetic piano, to touring the United States as a singer-songwriter in her early 20s, it is no surprise that Sirgun was destined to pursue a calling of music.

Urged by her mother to not lose her authentic voice by way of vocal lessons, Sirgun developed her own sound by listening to her favorite artists, turning poems into songs, recording her music on a karaoke machine, and taking jazz piano lessons while studying at Brown University - the latter of which was encouraged by her father. Her piano instructor at Brown helped Sirgun learn new ways to create her own songs.

It was not until she discovered Kundalini Yoga, chanting, and mantra, however, that she understood the transformative and healing potential of music. Sirgun believes that our bodies and minds are both malleable and miraculous. Her music is designed to put listeners in a state where healing can naturally take place. By listening and chanting along, the nervous system is soothed, the mind becomes less chaotic, and the world seems a little less overwhelming. It was a gradual process of observing and listening to other chant artists, mixed with her own songwriting experiences that lead to this spiritual path. Since then, Sirgun has released five albums of sacred chants: -8, Reclaim Your Happiness, Dayaal, The Cosmic Gift, and The Music Within.

As a mother of two, Sirgun initially thought raising children would be a barrier to her music, but has found the opposite to be true. She recorded her debut solo album, The Cosmic Gift, soon after her first son was born. In fact, he was nursing while Sirgun recorded the majority of the vocals. Motherhood has enabled Sirgun to become more disciplined, diligent, and appreciative of her ability to make music. Sirgun’s music has been used by various healers in both spiritual- and medical-based practices. Renowned Kundalini Yoga teacher Gurmukh frequently plays “Amen” in her classes. “Bliss” was used across the globe during the breaks for day-long meditation event, White Tantric Yoga®. Dr. Joel Kahn, a prominent holistic heart surgeon in Michigan, recommends her music to his patients. Sirgun has performed in Europe and across the United States, leading conscious festivals such as Bhakti fest.

Throughout her musical journey, Sirgun has lovingly realized that she has no control over who listens to her music and how it is interpreted. She strongly feels that the intention she puts into her music translates accurately to each recipient, regardless of where it ultimately ends up.

Sirgun currently resides in a yoga community in Phoenix, Arizona with her husband and two children.

happiness has a momentum
Momentum is harnessing the energy that creates and maintains the Cosmos. We all have momentum that drives our moments, but much of our momentum isn’t working for us. Limiting beliefs that we have collected a lot of evidence to support, create strong momentum that seems difficult to shift. When we have a practice that aligns the ME and the me, we see new momentum begin to create itself automatically. But we must also recognize that every moment is an opportunity for “practice,” and that our mental focus can maintain or undermine our pursuits. When we gather new evidence that supports a momentum in harmony with our Vision (hint: it will FEEL really good!), the law of attraction brings us more and more such evidence, creating stronger and stronger momentum in the “right” direction.

This is what I believe Yogi Bhajan meant when he said “keep up and you’ll be kept up.” When you choose a focus in any moment that keeps you elevated and happy, the Cosmos holds you there... KEEPS you up. The only thing you need to do is focus on the being UP part, which requires an alignment in yourself, which is the purpose of spiritual practice.

Why Chant?
The human voice is our most portable, most readily available musical instrument.

Everything is vibration. So, when we sing in a devotional way (chant), we tune our body instrument to the frequency of our Highest Potential. We find the acceptance, the beauty, the joy, and the validation within our own Self.

I know how these sacred mantras can lift us beyond our limited reality, into a blissful and ecstatic space, and I love to share that experience with others.

Chanting and happiness
Happiness is the evidence of our spiritual connection. The feeling of HAPPY tells us we are moving in the direction of our ever-expanding Source. It feels GOOD to be tuned to the frequency of our vision, our mission, our purpose. That is all happiness is. It is simple to achieve because it is our natural state. So long as we aren’t preventing our self from feeling our innate happiness, HAPPY is the default setting. Any way that we can raise our vibration is in itself a CHANTING experience because we are vibrating the cells of our body to the frequency of our Source. “Chanting the NAAM” is exactly that. It is vibrating at the highest frequency we can reach for. NAAM is who we really are, and NAAM sets the frequency to which we will experience happiness when we tune to it. There are many ways of “chanting”, but a very effective way is through the voice because it resonates the entire body with harmonizing and aligning sound.
